The line clicked dead and my whole body froze in complete shock. Surrounding me, the room was sickeningly silent, all eyes on me. Without warning, I let out an ear shattering shriek, muffled by the sound of my own hand. My heart started pounding and the world around me was spinning. The only sounds running through my head were the gunshot and Liam's screams.
He was gone
These words repeated over and over in my head and I dropped the phone and sunk to my knees crying. The girls looked at me and nervously questioned the booming noise on the other end of the line.
"Ari what's going on?" Daisy worried, her body shaking as she hurried to my side. I couldn't even pick my head up long enough to look at her. The girls began panicking, but everything around me seemed to be a blur as Johanna rushed them outside, ignoring all questions until further notice.
I sat leaning up against the kitchen counter, my head in my hands and my breathing coming out in ragged breaths. The tears and wet mascara soaked my cheeks as I sobbed uncontrollably on the cold white tiles of the kitchen floor.
Johanna hurried back inside and fell to her knees beside me. She put her arm around my shoulders and tried to calm me down or get some kind of information out of me. However her attempts at pacifying me proved futile when the only sounds I made were muffle cries of distress.
They shot him I thought to myself. They tortured him. They killed him. I continued ranting to myself. My Liam, my fiancé.
Gone.
Forever.
Never would he know of the beautiful child he impregnated me with. He unwillingly left me to raise a child alone with no help, and I didn't even get to say goodbye.
Six days since I last talked to him.
Six days of me worried sick that someone would do something stupid.
Six days of living in the dark
Six days of me worrying about my nightmare hoping it would all just stop.
Six days of me waiting to find out that I was in fact, living my nightmare.
"Honey what was that?" Johanna asked, furiously wiping her tears away from her warm cheeks. The lump in my throat prevented any words from coming out. All I could do was shake my head no as I sat on the kitchen floor, staring into space ahead of me.
"Baby girl you need to talk to me" she urged, resting back on her heels as she squeezed my hands tightly. My eyes squeezed shut, trying to block out the gut wrenching sound that will most likely be permanently engrained in my mind.
When I didn't budge, she stood firmly from the floor and walked away. Behind all the worry, I felt slightly guilty for being so inconsiderate, but I had never experienced such a scene.
This was the type of event that one would see in a movie, not in real life. Nobody wakes up one morning and expects to hear a gun shot fired at their loved one.
"They shot him" my voice muttered in a tone that was no higher than a slight breathless whisper. Her body visibly tensed and as I looked up, her face slowly began to drain of color, visualizing all of the possibilities.
"He's gone"
