Chapter 9

I sit up breathing hard. Pain flashes through my shoulders as I lean forward. Peering out from my small shelter, I see red, orange and yellow leaves falling. Leaf-fall. That thought sinks in. I need to find food.

I taste the air. An overwhelming scent of rabbit floods my mouth, coming from a few mouselengths outside my bush. What is a rabbit doing here? Carefully, I step half out of my shelter. Nobody's there. Seeing the rabbit, I paw it closer to me. It's still warm. Whoever caught it must have left it here when I was unconscious.

I drag the prey into the bush and lay down again. I dig in and before I can think, it's gone. This is better than anything I've ever had. I lick my lips in satisfaction. My eye lids slowly get heavier and heavier. With a contented sigh, I sink into blackness once more.

A moon has passed since I'd found the rabbit. I had refused to eat crowfood because of how good warm prey tasted, so I have been going into the forest to get hunt. Right now I'm hunting farther into the forest than I've ever gone before.

I lift my nose and sniff. A strong scent of squirrel catches my attention. Slowly walking towards the scent, I can see its fluffy tail in the tall grass. I quickly move downwind so it can't smell me and prowl forward. When I'm a few foxlengths away from the squirrel I pounce. Landing squarely on it's back, I bite down and snap it's neck. Satisfaction floods through me as I lean down to take a bite.

"Nice catch."

I quickly look up. A red tom with bright green eyes is standing right in front of me.

"But you need to get off StormClan territory before the rest of my patrol comes."
StormClan?

His eyes flash in warning as footsteps sound behind him. I grab my prey. But before I can take off, he suddenly asks. "What's your name?"

I call over my shoulder as I leap away. "Silver."

As I'm runnning, I can faintly hear him call back. "Sparrowfeather!"

I'm now eating in my bush, daydreaming about Sparrowfeather.
The way his ginger fur glows in the sun... and his eyes...

I sigh.

Now all that's left of my prey is some scraps of fur and a few small bones. I step up and start pawing them out of my den. I pause.
Somebody's watching me.

"Show yourself!" I meow while softly growling. The undergrowth moves and Shadow walks out.

"Why hello again Silver." He sneers. "You didn't have enough last time?" His claws slowly slide out. "Anyway, I'm here to take you with me. To my clan." Hatred slowly builds up inside me as I recall Silverwing's tale. This cat killed her. This cat killed Fawn.

"I will never join your group." I snarl. He laughs as Cloud, Shade, a she-cat I don't know and a tom I don't know surround me.

"Well, I don't think you have a choice now Silver. You can come quietly without a fight, or we can make you come." Shadow hisses. "It's your choice."
