In a half-hour, I get a certificate to adopt and permission from Katrina's grandmother to adopt her. I grab all of the papers and rush back to the hospital, folding them and tucking them in my locker. I head back to take care of more patients. By the end of the day, I get to send four more patients home. I now have three, including Katrina, who I'm taking home today. I have two more, who both look fit enough to go home in the next week.
I head over to Katrina's portion, she is asleep. I shake her and she looks up at me. Her cheeks are pale and the skin under her eyes was purple. I feel her forehead, it feels normal. I look up at her and say, "You aren't going to your grandmas today."
She looks at me, confused, and then asks, "I'm not sick, am I?" I shake my head.
I gulp and explain, "I got a certificate of adoption so... I mean, if you want to you can..." I trail off and look at her, she's beaming. She practically screams with excitement. I smile and say, "Is that a yes?"
She grabs my neck and hugs me, and I pick her up. I just got a two person apartment, so I'll need your help moving into it.
I grab a wheelchair and cruches for Katrina on the way out of the hospital, and we head back to my hom, to our home. I push Katrina down the road and, at her request, we stop to get icecream.
