6 WEEKS LATER
I come home from the hospital to find Katrina looking at the mail, she's staring at something that looks pretty important. I run up to her and look over her shoulder. This is what it says:
NOTICE: Looking for a doctor, cartographer, and six collectors. Government-approved. See the legal enforcement office.
I look at Katrina's face, she sets the paper down and picks up a lumpy package. I grab the letter and head to my room, telling Katrina that dinner will be in a half-hour.
Government-approved. That means that anyone can go. I wonder where the expedition is going. I wonder if I can join. I don't have the experience to be a cartographer for an important expedition but... doctor...
While we eat dinner I tell Katrina about the idea, asking if she would like to see if we could do it. It's a huge deal. Huge. An expedition. I would love to go on an expedition.
After dinner, we head to the Legal Center. When I get there I ask about the expedition. The woman at the front desk tells me that the expedition is to southern earth, led by a man named Captain Start, and that Katrina would be able to come.
When we get home we've decided to go, and wow, am I excited.
. . .
Captain Start looked with scorn at his companion, a skinny man, not older than twenty. The man looked anxious and was drawing a map. The man looked over his shoulder at the map he was drawing, pointing at the outskirts.
That is where we'll be going. We're going to the land of Fire and Ice.
