Glimpse of the Past

Third Person's POV

The summer breeze in the middle of March here in Greenwoods is far better than the one she experienced in the city. Natalie thought as she brushed a curl of her red fiery hair off her face and place it behind her ears. She smelled the sweet and strong aroma of coffee from the mug in her hands before she took a sip. Her blue eyes roamed at the busy shops several meters away from her. Greenwoods is a small town outside the jurisdiction of Middleton where she grew up. The place lacks the modern technology Middleton offered but it gives a calming vibe and serenity. One thing she always seeks ever since her mother passed away two years ago.

And for two years, her life had been a mess. At the age of seventeen, her mother left her in the care of her stepdad. A big man whose priority is to extract money from her bank left by her mother and to make her life a living hell.

She took another sip as she recalled the last time she saw her stepdad. It was more than ten months now since the accident. The accident which she believes as a painful blessing in disguise.

They were arguing inside the car because her money in the bank was gone.

"With all the withdrawals and nothing to deposit, of course, the money will be gone!" she remember her screams of rage towards the man that was soon followed by a loud slap.

Little did they know that the traffic light ahead had already turned red and a large truck was speeding across.

She cringed her nose as she tried to recall the exact event. But she can't force herself to. She only remembered being dragged out from the car while her head was spinning. She heard numerous shouts and a big booming sound. An image of a red blazing fire came to view before she passed out.

She took the last sip of her now lukewarm coffee before standing up from the wooden chair she'd been occupying for an hour now. She took a step and immediately halted as she felt the jolt of pain from her ankle. With only her nightdress and a robe to cover her body, she looked down and inspected her left ankle. There lies a big scar she got from the accident. That was all she was left. No stepdad, no money, nothing. After suffering multiple surgeries for her two broken bones, she hoped to be well again. But she knew that there are things that can't be brought back again. And one of those things is her normal walk.

She took another step again and the pain subsided a little. With a limp as she walks, she left the veranda connected to her room and made her way towards the kitchen below.

She glanced toward the refrigerator where a lot of papers were posted. With a marker in her hand now, she checked one box in the list of her thing to be done.
