Renjun was in the breakroom of the local diner, hanging up his apron on it's regular hook, when he felt that familiar buzz against his hip. Tugging his phone out of his front pocket, he clicked the on button, sniffling slightly due to his seasonal allergies. The chill of the fall air had seeped into the diner and their crappy heating system wasn't doing jack shit.
Resting plainly on his phone screen were two words in the form of a text message he got often enough, always causing a sense of panic and worry to go through him.
Bad Day.
Renjun let out a tired sigh, rubbing his eyes with his free hand as the effects of his 8-hour-shift began to hit him. His fingers moved slowly in response to the text, sending back the same two word response before tucking his phone into his back pocket. He quickly grabbed his bag, throwing his light brown suede jacket over his shoulder as he walked out of the breakroom.
The chatter of conversations greeted him as he walked out of the breakroom, throwing a passing employee a smile as they walked by with a tray of food expertly balanced on their palms. He was proud enough to say that at one given time he could balanced five plates on his arms, although his co-worker Taeyong could do six -- the show off.
Renjun walked towards the kitchen, pushing the flimsy set of double doors open to poke his head inside. Renjun immediately got the attention of one of the assistant chefs inside, giving the still working boy an encouraging but tired smile.
"The usual Renjun?" The familiar words repeated themselves and Renjun nodded, slipping into the kitchen and standing off to the side, watching as the assistant chef picked up a pen and scribbled something down before sticking the order note to the collection in front of him.
"Yes please. Thank you Kun, you're a lifesaver," Renjun said gratefully, earning a dismissive wave of Kun's hand as he set to work fixing Renjun's normal order. Well, if they were technically speaking, it wasn't Renjun's order.
The text that he received was one he got often, the sender being a classmate and friend who was affectionately called 'Yangyang'. The boy was a Chinese and Business major, the two degrees combining to form a hell of a resume for the boy who was working towards becoming an ambassador, although he wasn't sure which company he wanted to work for yet.
It was actually quite surprising the two had become friends at all, Renjun having enrolled in a Psychology and Sociology double-major program. The two boys didn't exactly have classes that aligned. But, luckily for them, they had been placed in some general education classes together, forced to suffer with each other in Calculus and Psychology 101.
From there they had formed a steady relationship, not exactly talking outside of class (their friend groups completely separated) but still able to get in the odd friendly conversation here and there when they saw each other in the dorms or in class.
That changed when Renjun had walked past the boy's dorm room, the door wide open to reveal the other as he was curled into a ball, crying hysterically.
