The echo of metal against ice was music to Mark's ears and he let out a careful and controlled breath. The cold air of the ice rink was comforting against his skin and he closed his eyes, his body trained and familiar with the ice and it's boundaries.
His ice skates were carefully fit against his feet as they danced around one another, intertwining and weaving in and out as he turned and skate backwards for a moment. He carefully turned to skate forwards and bent his body a little, picking up the speed he needed. He set off from the outside edge of his right foot.
A deep breath.
His body soared through the air and his head spun to spot his landing as his hands tucked across his chest and he twisted in the air. His skates touched the ice, landing carefully on the outside edge of his left foot, completing his axel jump. His leg expertly moved to raise behind him, evening out his momentum and balance.
An exhale.
He smiled, his feet turning out as he moved around the curvature of the skating rink. His hoodie was beginning to stick to his sweaty skin and he pulled at it in discomfort. The rink was empty, but he had expected it to be since it was close to three am. That, and the owner had given him the keys to open the rink himself for some extra practice -- once of his competitions was coming up.
Mark was a figure skater.
He had been his entire life. His friends and family even like to joke that he learned to skate before he learned to walk, which he wasn't entire sure was entirely a lie. Skating was like breathing to Mark. If he couldn't skate, he wouldn't truly be alive.
Skating to the side of the rink, Mark leaned over the railing and picked up his water bottle, twisting the cap off and downing half of the contents in one go. He had been practicing for around an hour now, and he was beginning to get out of breath. Not that he was practicing for anything, he had always been against professional competitions. Perhaps too afraid he would lose his passion for it if he made it a job; a chore.
"I knew you'd be here."
Mark's lips turned up at the familiar tone of voice and he turned to see his boyfriend standing near the edge of the bleachers. A backwards facing cap fit around his head and his hands were tucked into his winter jacket. Mark skated to the opening of the rink, the taller of the duo making his way over.
"You knew I'd be here?" Mark raised his eyebrows and his boyfriend smiled, ruffling Mark's hair before pressing a kiss against his forehead, "So you were looking for me?" Mark's eyes dropped to see a pair of skates dangling in the older's hand. He almost wanted to laugh.
Mark's boyfriend - Johnny Suh - was a hockey player, and he was damn good at it.
The older boy's college team had been at the top of their game for about two years now. In those two years, they had won a majority of their games and had remained at the top months and months on end. Mark knew that the older had the big game coming up soon, the tickets for it sitting impatiently on his dresser.
The ice skater remembered the first day they had met three years ago; it wasn't a pretty one.
To put it simply: the times they had booked the rink at been mixed up and the book keeper had accidentally put them down for the same time instead of the separated 10am and 10pm. From there the two had to suffer and practice together for the next three hours, Mark struggling to use the full expanse of the rink for his elaborate routine while Johnny's net and cones were set up.
