I can't claim to have come up with this idea. I recently read a fanfiction made by and author on fanfiction.net by the name of necronicus. The author has not updated any of their stories a long time so I thought that I can write this idea down to help spread it around since their are not many of them.
Any way I would read the story made by him, it is called fire and metal and is very well made. I would try to keep the story some what similar but you can change things to your discretion. But do keep the Oc a non-bender, helps with the plot and development, in the original last airbender series azula was considered a prodigy with fire bending and the only one to match her would be her father ozai. Thus it is needed for her to be weak in physical fighting since she focuses on bending.
