The blunt sword swung, slicing the flesh of one of Arthur's fighters. Struggling to balance himself, Merlin grabbed his wound in agony all while trying to defend his destiny from Morgana.
Gaius could sense that Merlin was in trouble, running to the boys aid, placing his hand over Merlin's holding pressure to the wound. "I need to take you back to the tent. You're in no condintion to fight," Gaius spoke.
Merlin would argue but he knew he had to get out of there, even if it meant leaving Arthur behind. The boy performed a spell that gave Arthur an invisible shield of protection before averting his gaze back the Gaius, nodding slowly.
The walk back to the tent was terrible. Merlin's body feeling limp, making Gaius carry his weight. Merlin's head spun like he was about to black out, but managed to stay awake.
The physician encouraged his student, making sure that Merlin held as little pain as he could.
When they finally arrived back to the tent, Merlin's body burned.
Gaius carefully removed Merlin's shirt, using the shredded pieces to clean the blood from Merlin's body.
Merlin flinched at the pain, but he knew he was in good hands with Gaius. He gently cleaned the wound, feeling every bit of warmth of Merlin's skin upon his fingertips. "Do you think you can heal yourself?" Gaius asked.
Merlin was nervous to try with the knights and Arthur not being to far away.
"You don't have to, it'll heal you quicker." Gaius explained. "It's not too deep so you'll be okay with a potion."
Merlin nodded choosing the safer route. He didn't want to risk Arthur discovering his powers before he was ready to tell him.
Gaius looked around the tent, noticing he didn't have any herbs to mix together. He sighed at the fact, turning back to Merlin. "I'm afraid to say that I've got no herbs, it's too dangerous to go out."
"I'll be fine," Merlin muttered, slowly lifting himself up, groaning from the pain that course through his body.
Gaius sat the boy back down, tying Merlin's scarf around his shoulder. "You need to rest, Merlin."
"How do you expect me to relax?" Merlin asked, furious with himself for getting hurt.
"I understand that you're angry that Arthur is still out there, but you can't help him, that'll have you both killed." Merlin understood what Gaius was saying, but he was also frustrated as he felt tension. "I'll cook your favorite."
Merlin just nodded, turning to his uninjured shoulder. "If Arthur dies then he would fail."
"He won't."
"But," Merlin tried to argue.
Gaius sat on the bed beside the injured boy, "Arthur's a fighter."
Again, he was right. Merlin felt butterflies in his stomach from the authority of Gaius.
"W-Will you lay with me," Merlin asked innocently. He didn't want to be left alone, he wanted Gaius to stay with him.
"Of course." This wasn't awkward as they were so close, practically sharing everything.
Merlin grabbed Gaius' hand wrapping it around his waist, causing the older man to spoon the boy. Merlin rested his head on the pillow, cuddling into Gaius as he laced their fingers together.
Gaius ran his fingers through the boys hair helping him fall asleep. This soothed Merlin as he drifted off to sleep. The sound of his heartbeat echoed against Gaius' hand.
