The Office

This one shot is a shourtney/the office crossover. Shayne=Jim Courtney=Pam. other people equal other people, you'll figure it out. If you haven't seen the office, well it doesn't really matter. Also, it's worth noting that I haven't updated in over a month and a half, but schools just been really tough right now. Anyway, enjoy!

"Dunder Miflin, this is Courtney"

Shayne Topp looked to his right from his desk to catch a glimpse of his best friend and co-worker at the Dunder Miflin paper company, Courtney Miller. He couldn't help himself. When the secretary had such a smooth and perfect tone, to him it was no wonder that his eyes would be drawn to the source of the sound. He remembered his first day at the office. How she had smiled so sweetly and laughed so genuinely with him. It could honestly be considered unhealthy, how Shayne relived every significant detail and moment of their friendship every time she merely glanced at him. That word pained him actually, friendship. He'd be lying if he said he didn't want more than that, so very much more than that. But there was something, or someone, who...

"Oh hey Jason!"

Jason. Courtney's fiancé of over... three years. That number in itself spoke volumes. Shayne looked back down at his work. He knew that Courtney deserved allot more than Jason was giving her. He just wished Courtney knew it.

"Oh, right, I see"

Shayne raised his head once more, as Courtney suddenly sounded disappointed. Shayne's blood boiled. No matter how small whatever Jason did, it disappointed Courtney, and that was enough.

"No, I understand. Right. Well my bosses are calling me, I should go. Yeah. Bye"

She hung up the phone, but she had lied. Her bosses were in their office, probably doing fuck all like always. She just had to get off that call as soon as possible so she didn't have a break down that her fiancé could hear. She really worked hard on those oil paintings, and she was over the moon when she got a small bit of space at the local art gallery. But she had really hoped Jason would make the effort to come and see them, or show any interest in her personal life really. She sunk down further into her seat, pretending to be working on something on her computer.

It was torture watching Courtney in distress like that, so Shayne hatched a plan. He headed into the break room, and returned with two packets of M&Ms. He sat back down at his desk and began to open one of the packets, but was interrupted by the voice of his desk mate.

"No eating during work hours Shayne".

Shayne looked up at his desk mate Ian Hecox, the "Assistant to the regional manager". He thought he had some form of authority with that title, but it was really just a title given to him by Rhett and Link to stop him from whining. It made him a very fun person to mess with. Shayne looked at Ian with a confused expression

"Haven't you heard?"
"Heard what?"
"That M&Ms are the cure?"
"The cure to what?"
"Oh my god, he doesn't even know about the cure"
"The cure to what, Shayne?"
"I can't believe Rhett and Link haven't told you yet, you should go ask them"

Ian looked at Shayne angrily, before shooting up from his seat and knocking on the office door of their bosses. That got him out of the way. Continuing with his plan, Shayne continued opening the packet. He pulled a red candy from the bag, and discreetly lined up a shot that was to hit Courtney directly on the head.  It did so, and Courtney looked up quickly, but not quick enough to see Shayne duck his head and pretend to be working. She looked back at her computer, but soon after, a full packet of M&Ms landed on her keyboard. She looked up, and was startled to see her best friend Shayne Topp, leaning over the receptionist's desk, and eating out of a pack of his own M&Ms.

"So what's Jason done this time?"

Anyone else asking this question would have been considered intruding by Courtney, but since it was Shayne asking the question, it seemed the most endearing thing in the world to her. He had always been her go to in case of distress.

"Oh, nothing too bad, but he's got something on with his friends this weekend, so he can't come to my art thingy"

Shayne gritted his teeth in anger at the thought of Jason. How could he miss the opportunity to support Courtney when she needed it most? The nerve on him. His fiancé was damn fucking talented, and he didn't even seem to care. Before Shayne could get too angry, Courtney spoke, her voice instantly soothing him.

"It's okay though. I can't expect him to put everything aside for me"
"I would" mumbled Shayne.
"Sorry?"
"Oh, nothing"

Shayne stood at her desk for a few more seconds, before making some excuse to do with having to do more work. But it was there, that Shayne made the decision to go to Courtney's art show. He wasn't going to before, in case of encountering Jason, but now nothing was going to stop him.

Time rolled forward to the weekend, where Courtney could be found in the bathroom of an art gallery, trying her best not to start crying. It was half way through her exhibition. Nobody, not a single person, had spoken to her about her work, or even acknowledged her.

"No Courtney, this isn't the time" She thought to herself. "Go back out to your paintings, and show yourself that Jason made a mistake in not coming".

She straightened up, looking in the bathroom mirror, and wiped the slight moisture from her eyes. She forced herself out the door, and back to the exhibition. But she was surprised, when she saw a familiar broad back in a black T-shirt facing away from her exhibition. Never had she been so happy to see her best friend, which was saying allot considering how happy he made her regardless of the situation, although right now, best friends didn't seem like a high enough ranking of her relationship with Shayne. She walked up behind him, and wrapped her arms around him from behind. Shayne tensed up briefly before he realised who's arms were wrapped around him. He prised her arms off of him so that he could turn around and press her close to his chest.

"Thank you for coming" mumbled Courtney.
"Wouldn't have dared miss it"

They soon pulled apart, as they had been getting some weird looks from the many art snobs around them. They turned to the wall where Courtney's work had been pinned up with thumb tacs.

"I like this one allot" said Shayne as he pointed to one off to the side. Courtney looked off to where he was pointing, and blushed. She had forgotten she had put that one up. It was oil painting of Shayne sat at his desk, just working, nothing more, but it meant everything to Shayne. He continued.

"The model is very handsome"

Courtney sniggered, deciding to continue off his joke.

"Yeah, I know, that's why I chose him dummy"

Courtney smiled broadly as she saw Shayne blush deeply with a stupid grin on his face.

"How much for it?"

Courtney looked at him, dumbstruck. She hadn't really been planning on selling anything today, not that she didn't want any, she just didn't think anybody would actually be willing to give her money for her work.

"Uhm... I wasn't really planning on selling anything today"
"Why not?"
"I guess I just didn't think anybody would want some dumb painting of mine"

Shayne turned to her and gripped onto her shoulders, forcing to her to look at him.

"Courtney, I would spend thousands of dollars on each and every one of these paintings"
"You don't have thousands of dollars, Shayne"
"Oh trust me, I'd find a way".

Courtney giggled at his remark, and her heart fluttered at his touch simultaneously. Shayne was really just perfect. She had known it for a long time, but now it was certain. She wanted to spend her life with Shayne. Not Jason. It wasn't a simple thing, just swapping partners, especially when she already had a fiancé, and she would probably be better off where she was now, but at least now she was sure how she really felt.
