It was evident to everyone that she wasn't happy, heck, it was evident to Courtney that she wasn't happy, so why she stayed in this relationship almost as dead as the personality of her partner, she didn't know. Part of her knew that it was her desperation not to be alone coming in to play, in fact, it was likely what this whole relationship was based on. She remembered the night that she met Aaron, in that bar. She had just broken up with her ex, and had sent out a tweet to do with chilli's, before heading to any bar that was close, at that point needing to be the stereotypical old person who sat at the bar, drowning their sorrow in a large variety of alcoholic beverages. She was certain that she must have gotten unlucky that night, because she was sure that at that point in the night, she would have been happy for anyone to come on to her. At that point, Aaron seemed to be the most charming man in the world, and she needed to not be lonely. But when she woke up in his bed the next morning, she quickly got the impression that she may have mistaken a wallet for a personality.
She woke up and saw a neatly written note on the bedside table beside her. It informed her that Aaron had gone to work, and that she could help herself to food in his fridge, followed by a series of digits she could only assume to be his phone number. She quickly had a look at her surroundings, noticing expensive looking vases and artwork vomited over the room. She then figured out that she must be in a fairly large apartment if there was room for all this artwork in just his bedroom. She threw on one of his robes, and exited the bedroom, her suspicions now confirmed as she entered a massive living room with a kitchen attached to it by a large quartz island. She saw that there was even more artwork, and even more vases and strange sculptures littering the apartment. Her first thought was, "Oh cool, a man who appreciates the arts" but she soon realised how different all these items were to each other. The paintings for example, had plenty of variety to them, and not in a good way. There were portraits, landscapes, abstracts, and more. Now Courtney had met snobs before, but it didn't seem like Aaron was one, it seemed like he was someone who used stereotypically snobbish things that he knew nothing about to cover up an empty personality.
Later, after arriving home, she hit Aaron up with a text, asking if they could go for some dinner the next day, suggesting that they meet at eight. He responded with a very simple "Sure." In any other scenario, something as small as that simply wouldn't have registered with Courtney, but now it was another red flag in her mind. She couldn't help but analyse the simplicity of the one word response, and how it brought such a lack of the excitement that should surely be present when planning a date with a new partner. But nonetheless, she tried her best to ignore it.
The date ended up making her feel like Cinderella, but in the worst way possible. She had found a prince charming at a ball, and he had swept her off her feet, with her knowing nothing about him other than he was there, and looked good. You could count the instances where Courtney spoke on one hand, and could cut the awkward tension with a butter knife. But in the end, Cinderella got her happy ever after right? maybe the same could happen for her. Six months into the relationship, and this began to seem less and less likely.
She remembered a couple of weeks in, when she first brought Aaron into the office, looking to introduce him to some of her friends. It was very busy in the office, so her friends wouldn't have had any time for anything other than a quick handshake and hello. However, Courtney couldn't help but notice a certain pair of eyes locked to her and Aaron whenever they interacted.
Shayne seemed to keep a constant eye upon her and Aaron, hyper analysing their interactions. Courtney was certainly confused as to why, but her un-worded curiosities were to be answered the next day. She received a text from Shayne later, asking her if she was "up for coffee tomorrow morning?" They didn't have work the following day, and she was free, so she messaged back, agreeing to meet up with him.
