Catherine yelled out to her seven year old son.
"Shayne! Come downstairs this instant! Corey is going to be here any second along with her daughter!"
Shayne let out an exasperated sigh, quickly pressing the buttons on his gameboy to save his progress in pokémon silver, right in the middle of trying to obtain a gym badge that had evaded him for too long, before yelling back to his mother
"Okay, I'm coming"
With a sense of dread, he made his way down the stairs to his mother in the kitchen, awaiting their guests. His mothers friend Corey was coming around for 'a chat' with his mother, and she was apparently bringing her daughter with her. If he knew his mother (which he did) then he was sure he would be forced to play with the daughter, and he was dreading that. He hadn't had very many one on one interactions with girls before, but all his friends at school told him that girls only like playing with dolls, and, playing house, and, make up and stuff, none of which Shayne was willing to indulge in. Before he could sink any further into his rising dread, the door bell rang.
"That must be them! Come to the door with me so that we can greet them, Shayne!"
He let out a final sigh, before dragging his feet towards the door, accompanying his mother.
"Corey!"
"Catherine!"The two mothers hugged for a couple of seconds before breaking away, and Catherine acknowledged the youngster next to Corey.
"And this must be Kari!"
"Courtney actually, Kari's with her friends and I figured Courtney is closer to Shayne's age anyway. Say hi, Courtney!"Shayne had been looking at Corey since she was the one talking, and also because he half hoped that if he didn't look at the daughter she wouldn't be real, but when she let out a sort of grunt instead of verbal greeting, Shayne had to take a look at the source of the noise.
Instead of the dresses and vomit inducing shades pink he had expected, he saw what could have been described as the complete opposite. Dark green sketchers led into a pair of black leggings, which reached up to a dark blue t-shirt, but what was on the t-shirt is what surprised Shayne. A big, flaming orange Charizard stared at him, although much of it was concealed by a pair of arms clutching onto a game boy that was held in front of the girls midriff for her green, bespectacled eyes that were slightly covered by blond, shoulder length hair. To say he was impressed would be an understatement.
Her mother sighed at Courtney's lack of communication, before turning back to Catherine to whisper something to her.
"And between you and me, Courtney needs friends allot more than Kari does."
She raised her voice to a regular level, speaking to her daughter
"Alright sweetie, go play with Shayne now!"
Courtney let out a sigh, very similar to the ones Shayne had given out earlier, before reaching out with one hand to grab Shayne's wrist while keeping one hand clasped around her game boy, and dragging him along behind her, up the stairs, and to the room that she could clearly tell belonged to a seven year old boy.
They entered, and Courtney immediately flopped onto Shayne's bed, still not saying anything, still remaining within the world of her game. Shayne awkwardly walked over, sitting at the opposite side of the bed, unsure of what to say. He didn't know if he was meant to talk to girls differently, or if she would even talk to him.
"Come on Shayne, think!" he thought. After a few minutes, he formulated a plan, and he hoped that against a pokémon fan, it would be fool proof. He stared down into his lap, and murmered out something that was simply unintelligible. With great annoyance and exasperation, Courtney put down her console to speak to him.
"What?"
Shayne shrunk in on himself even more, but spoke a bit clearer than before.
"Do you wanna see my pokémon cards?"
After a few seconds of silence, he slowly turned his head towards Courtney. Her eyes were locked onto him, almost as if she was considering actually having a conversation with someone for once. After a few seconds, she gave a singular nod.
Shayne couldn't help but beam as he shot from the bed, and over to his closet to retrieve his collectors album that held countless amounts of pokémon cards within it's pages. Courtney had to restrain herself from letting out a giggle at Shayne's, and if she wasn't fooling herself, her own excitement. Shayne made his way to a beanbag at the corner of his room, plopping down on it and opening the album. Courtney quickly made her way over, and sitting down right next to Shayne, while Shayne placed the album in between them so that they could both see easily.
"So do you collect them as well?"
"Yep, I have almost all of the gen one cards"
"Oh, I'm missing like, twenty of them"They flipped through the album, both of them offering analysis on different pokémon and their strengths, and reasons why they like them and such, both discussing the topic animatedly, until they reached the section where Shayne kept all his fire types, Courtney's eyes falling on a specific card, and falling silent.
"What's up?" asked Shayne.
Courtney pointed to a card right in the middle of a page, and Shayne's eyes followed the tip of her finger. She was pointing to his most prized possession, his pokémon card, the shiny Charizard.
"That's the only card I don't have"
Shayne was quiet for a few seconds, and before he could respond, his mother called up the stairs.
"Shayne! It's time for Courtney to go home"
Courtney stood up, but before she could leave, Shayne yelled back to his mother.
"Give us five minutes please!"
He stood up, and made his way over to where Courtney was standing, after he had pulled the shiny Charizard out of the collectors album. He held it out for Courtney to take from him.
"Shayne, I can't take that from you! Why should you ever give that to me?"
Shayne shrugged and looked at the ground shyly.
"I guess I just wanna be nice to you"
After a few moments, Courtney hesitantly reached out for it, slowly taking it from Shayne's hand.
"Thank you very much Shayne. I would hug you right now, but you know how it is, these days you can never tell who has cooties and who doesn't"
Shayne nodded sympathetically. He truly understood the struggle.
"But this was really nice, I hope that someday you could come to my house instead"
"That sounds fun, I'll ask my mum to make a play date or something"Shayne waved Courtney out the door, and she waved back, right until they were out of her line of vision. She looked down at the card she had been given, analysing it, as though she wasn't quite sure if it was actually real. Her mother cleared her throat.
"So is that one of your pokey-men?"
Courtney sighed and rolled her eyes, and her mother sighed also. She still wasn't as social as she would like, but at least it seemed like she had made a friend.
When they arrived home, Courtney immediately raced to her room, retrieving her own collectors album, but before she could add the final piece of her collection, she had a second thought of what to do with the card, and after some deliberation, decided instead to go grab her diary. She flicked to the last page, after she had grabbed a marker and some tape. At the top of the page, in bold letters, she wrote the word "SHAN" which was how she was convinced Shayne was spelt. Underneath, She drew a huge love heart that consumed almost the entire page, and using the tape, stuck her new pokémon card right in the middle of it.
(A/N *sigh* those damn cooties. I will be working on a part two to this one shot, which will take place faaaarrr in the future. Hopefully you'll like it. I know this wasn't my best written work, but I sort of did that on purpose, because it's about seven year olds, and I wanted to be more fitting to that theme)
