Chapter Twenty-Seven:
5

7,000 Executions

Fallon counted each breath as her anxiety heightened with every step she took closer to the house, she was hoping it would help to calm her ever-growing anxiety. It didn't. The crunching of the grass mixed with the crickets chirping and the waves crashing against the shore in the distance made for an unusually eery feeling hover in the air.

Sounds like these, on any other occasion, would be comforting to Fallon, but even these sounds could not calm her nerves.

"He-hey, did-did you guys know that.. uh, that King Henry, um, the eighth, of course, killed, like... fifty-seven thousand people. Because, you know, execution and shit."

Sarah blinked, sharing a look with Kie. "How does she know that? How do you know that?"

Fallon's cheeks pinkened with Sarah's sudden attention on her. "Um.. I-I just.. do?"

"Sh.." Kie hushed the two, her eyes landing on the house in front of her. She gulped, mumbling words of encouragement to herself. Fallon jumped, her hand flying to her mouth to silence a yelp as she stepped on a stick, the sound of it breaking startling her.

"She must have a generator plugged into the main power supply." Sarah suggested, shining the flashlight over the walls as she carefully climbed the stairs, cringing at the creaking sounds made. Kie and Fallon followed closely behind her, careful to not shine the light in the windows.

Kie opened the fuse box as Fallon anxiously looked around the darkened woods. Sarah's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "Where are the breakers?"

"What is this?" Kie asked herself, looking around the porch.

"No, no, no, no, no, no-" Sarah spoke, shaking her head as her eyes followed the wire.

"Shit." Kie groaned, her arms dropping to her sides.

"What? What's wrong?" Fallon asked, crossing her arms and pulling her eyes from the dark pathway.

"It goes inside." Sarah said.

"Awesome.." Fallon shut her eyes and shook her head. She inhaled a shaky breath and looked towards the door, "Is it unlocked?"

Kie shrugged, reaching forward and pulling open the metal storm door. She shared a look with Sarah and Fallon as she reached for the door handle.

"Oh, my.. god." Fallon covered her mouth as the door opened with a screech. "Lucky us.."

"Sh.." Sarah shushed, the gesture directed towards the door. "Okay, okay.. Let's, uh, go in."

The only sounds heard was the trio's uneven breathing and the creaking of the ancient floorboards as Fallon stepped foot into the house. She looked around, her eyes adjusting to the light change as she stepped closer to Kie, grabbing onto her hand. Kie, in turn, squeezed her hand tighter.

"Sh! Shit." Kie swore, squeezing her eyes shut and stumbling back into Fallon at the sound of a cat howling and darting through the living room. "Hey.."

Sarah followed Kie's gaze up to the ceiling, nodding in confirmation. "Yeah, yeah."

A feeling of relief washed over Fallon as a smile formed on her face as they turned the corner to see a fuse box. She reached up, ruffling her hair as she shook her head in disbelief. "Oh, thank god."
