Nick.
The Uber stops right at the parking lot of Tiffany's workplace. I pay him and he speeds off, spraying some gas on our faces. I turn to look at True, she's biting her lip nervously. I entangle her hands into mine to ease her nervousness. She nods and we both walk into the hospital, John-Stanford Hospital and medical care. On getting to the reception, I see one of Tiffany's friends, Ava having a chat with a guy I am assuming is a co-worker. When her eyes get out of the conversation to meet mine, she smiles and walks up to the both of us. I was still standing and holding True's hand. I began to feel every emotion she is feeling, even tightening the grip.
"Nick! Hi. What are you doing here?" Ava questions, squinting her eyes at me as she adjusts her scrubs. Her hair is always packed into a bun, leaving no strand whatsoever around her face. She wears reading glasses and it makes her look so professional in her office wear.
"Hi, Ava." I answer first, still holding True's hand. True smiles shyly and utters no word.
"It's Doctor. Ava around here," She gives a kind smile and I nod in understanding. "What are you doing here and who is the pretty lady?"
"Oh, yeah." I scratch the back of my neck. "Uhm, this is my friend from school, True. True, Av—Doctor Ava, Tiffany's close friend." I introduce them to each other. Ava shakes True's hand, giving me the 'eye'. I roll my eyes and pretend that I didn't see that.
"You haven't answered my question, Nick. What are you both doing here?" She repeats.
I groan in annoyance. Is there anything wrong in coming to see my own sister? "Uhm, I-uh, good question. I came to tell my sister something."
"Okay?" She raises her brows in suspicion. "What is the thing then?" She probes further. Now, we've taken a sit as True pretends to stare at some medical magazines displayed on the table.
Why can't people mind their business these days?
"Ava," I exhale a bit loud(ly). "I don't think it is your business whether I am here or not. I told you that I came to tell my sister something and that something seems private, or you don't get it?"
She blinks her eyes in shock. Totally taken aback by my response. I care less about how she's feeling. All I want is to get True help and nothing more. True taps my hand, mouthing for me to apologize, which I am not going to do.
Ava clears her throat, ushering us an available seat in front of the receptionist. "Nick, how do I put this delicately? You have to be free with me in situations like this. I know it is hard to tell-"
I cut her off, not understanding where she's driving at. "What are you saying, Ava? Time is running out and I have to see Tiffany for ten minutes. Why can't you allow me go?"
"I'm not stopping you, Nick." She touches my shoulder and holds True's hand. "What I want to tell you is; Life can happen at anytime. You have to be strong for you and your girlfriend. You cannot terminate the pregnancy. We do not term-"
I pull away from her, so does True. "Damn! What the hell is wrong with you? What nonsense are you saying, Ava?! Are you being serious right now? This is bullshit! Pure bullshit!"
The receptionist and a few patients begin to gather around where we are sitting. I completely forgot the no shouting policy in the hospital. I quickly apologize to the people and lower my voice.
"What did I say wrong? Isn't that why you are here?" She blinks her eyes at. . .me.
"No, that's so wrong. We are here for a checkup and she isn't my girlfriend. Do. You. Understand?" I grit my teeth.
