I awoke the next morning to the voice of our house elf, Maggie, telling me that my father wished to speak to me before I left for the train. The man may be my father but he makes me want to pitch myself off the astronomy tower.Sighing, I changed into my Muggle clothing, consisting of jeans, boots and a cropped, long sleeved, green knitted jumper.
"You wanted to see me, father?" I questioned coolly as I entered his study, spotting him standing near a bookshelf.
"Daughter! Yes, come, walk with me," I was instantly suspicious of his perky mood as he offered me his arm, which I took hesitantly.
"I've been having meetings with many pureblood families to find you a suitor I think worthy of you and I don't want any of them backing out, you'll behave at Hogwarts, won't you?" He spoke, his grip on me tightening as we ambled through the garden.
"Of course, father," I spoke nonchalantly, though inside, every brain cell that resided in my head was running around screaming.
He stared down at me with a look that made my blood run cold, the hair on the back of my neck standing up as I used all my strength to not crack under his glare.
"Good...now go before you're late," he released me from his death grip and I spun on my heel, heading back in towards the house, heaving out a sigh of relief once I was out of sight.
I sagged against the wall and huffed.
I took a few moments to catch my breath and regain my composure before I made my way towards the living room, where my mother and companions sat.
My mother had always been my rock, through everything. She had taught me many things as a child, faking the role of the perfect pure blood daughter being one of them.
She had also been the one to help me become an Animagus in my first year, when she still had some spirit left. Her teachings were considerably effective seen as she- herself, was one, a Kneazle.
It had been tough but she helped me through every step and after a while, my Animagus form became my sanctuary, I'd run through the woods behind the manor whenever I wanted and no one or nothing could stop me.
Nothing out there is a threat to a black panther.
"Have you got everything packed? Thea, dear, do remember Pearl," She spoke softly with a delirious smile as she looked- not at us but around her, visible bags under her eyes.
"Are you going to be alright while we're gone?" I furrowed my brows, my father would never hurt her but the dark lord on the other hand, I wasn't so sure.
"I'll be fine, sweetheart, you just have fun and work hard, don't worry about me," she brought me into a hug before doing the same to Ophelia and Hazel.
"I shall see you all during the holidays," she bid us goodbye and we waved.
"She's getting worse," Ophelia sighed and I nodded in agreement as we watched her wander away, looking lost.
"Is she still refusing to go to the healers?" Hazel questioned.
"Yes, but her sickness, whatever it is, is just making her weaker and weaker as the months go by, she's a shadow of what she once was," I ran a tired hand down my face, she used to be so lively, singing and dancing through the halls.
Now all she does is sit in her room, practically a skeletal statue.
"We must get going if we want to arrive in time, Mistress Thorne," Maggie spoke softly and I nodded in agreement, allowing her to apparate us to the station.
You may think me cold, but I've already accepted that my mother was already too far gone. The dark mark had taken its toll on her as it does everyone.
