The Thirteen lived drastically different lives than their descendants' counterparts and it shows because of how differently their characters were shaped by each life in each realm.

In one realm, Chadwick 'Chad' Francis Charming was adopted by Cinderella and Prince Charming when he was 6 years old and got to live a happy, safe, and fun life for two years until his previously thought to be infertile mother got pregnant with his sickly, younger sister, Chloe Charming.

After that, things changed for Chad.

His parents got busier and were constantly with his sister, worried that she would get worse at any moment. And when they weren't with her, they were trying their best to get the school to acknowledge Chad's learning disabilities and Chloe's medical accommodations while also trying to get Beast to return Cinderella's two stepsisters and their many children to their kingdom to no avail.

Every petition was turned down and ignored, and the schools kept dismissing them and ignoring what they were told, causing them to become more desperate and more distant from Chad. Leading to his grandfather, the duke, and the duke's wife, Prudence, to pick up the slack for them in the hopes that Chad wouldn't notice.

But eventually, after the deaths of his grandfather, Ferdinand (the duke), and Prudence, he did.

Which did not help the high school freshmen handle his grief in a constructive manner at all.

The fact that his and Audrey's relationships with their friends (Jane, Doug, Ben, and Lonnie) were falling apart also did not help matters.

So, he began to act out in hopes of getting back what he had lost-in hopes of getting his family and friends back. He did things he wasn't proud of. Things he knew his family would be ashamed of.

He stole.

He got in fights.

He used people to get what he wanted.

He snuck into people's rooms.

He cheated in school, used girls to get along, and turned into a bully-desperate to keep a hold on his M.V.P title and to keep his friends from moving on from him and Audrey. He couldn't protect them if he wasn't in their lives, after all.

Chad never considered that he had turned into the very thing they needed protecting from-the very thing he had fought against as a child. That he was holding them back and hurting them when he tried to keep them in line with what people thought they should be according to Auradon's standards. That he wasn't their protector anymore, but their fear monger.

Things got worse before they got better when the vks arrived.

Mal stole Ben from Audrey and changed Lonnie and Jane's hair.

Jay stole Chad's M.V.P status and unknowingly encouraged Lonnie to fight for what she believed in again.

Evie caught Doug's eye.

Jane fell for Carlos.

And Chad as always did not cope well and lashed out more. Seeing them as threats. Only to find that his usual tactics didn't work against them like they did with everyone else.
