I wake up to the buzzing of my alarm clock a 7 am. I have to turn it off quickly before Mark hears it. I go to the bathroom and clean myself up ready for school. I pull on my blue jeans and white jumper. I brush my random tufts of hair and wash my bruised face. I start applying my make to cover up my bruises and cuts. I've lear'nt how to apply it just right, not that anyone would even notice them anyway. I check myself in the mirror and I look kind of normal, well as normal as you can look when your step dad beats you up everyday.

I grab a banana and quickly run out the door before Mark wakes up. He was out last night till late drinking and doing who knows what. I have to sneak of to school every morning, otherwise I will never get out of this nightmare. If he finds me in the mornings sometimes he will teach me a lesson and make me stay home while he is past out on the couch. If I'm lucky he is drunk before I get home. I walk to school. It's not too far away and it's good fitness, means I can also get out sooner and get home later. On my way to school I pass the park mum and dad used to always take me to when I was a little girl I stop for a second and smile at it. I would feed the ducks while mum and dad would watch me smiling at each other. A car rushes past and brings me back to reality.

When I get to school it's like a zoo. There are kids everywhere, girls showing each other their new outfits and boys flexing their muscles. I keep my head down and walk looking at my scuffed converses with holes. I try and block out the voices bringing me down, but they somehow creep in. I am almost half way to my locker and I feel a knock to my side. I am thrown against the lockers. Everyone laughs and the head of the football team Ben says to me "Nice outfit, you look homeless" His words burn, but it's not like I haven't heard them before. I pick myself back up and open my locker. I grab my books for first period and shut it. I look up and there's a boy staring at me. He has short brown hair and brown eyes. He looks away when he see's me looking at him. I turn away checking behind me again and he has gone back to stacking his books. I get to science class, and first day back we have a new assignment fantastic! Mr Loren, our teacher decided it would be good to pair us in partners. I look down waiting as everyone else ask each other to be partners. "Lily?" I look up to see Mr Loren looking at me. "You will be paired with our new student, James". Mr Loren said pointing to the boy standing next to him. James smiled at Lily, he was the boy looking at her she thought. James sat down next to me. "Hi" He said. I wasn't used to talking to people so I look down at my bruised wrist. "Shy? No worries my brother is like that, cries every time someone talks to him" James said. Lily felt her heart race, why was he talking to her, was he going to hurt her? "Ummm, so should we get started?" James asked watching Lily. Lily nodded. "So we are studying the brain?" James asked. "Um yeah, if you turn to page 216 of your book..." Lily said reaching over to find the page. Her jumper slipped revealing her wrist. "Hey what's this?" James asked reaching for her wrist. Lily snatched her arm away from him and looked down. "Ah, fell of my bike on the way to school" Lily lied. James nodded not looking convinced.

Her first day had been okay so far. Only one push and a couple of notes in her locker. Lily went up to the food dispenser and put in her change for a packet of cookies. She grabbed her cookies and walked to the bathroom. The bathroom was empty much to her relief. Lily sat down on the stall and bit into her cookie. She opened up her textbook and did her homework she had already gotten. Lily sighed as the bell rang for class. She headed to maths, this was a subject she was very bad at because she could never pay attention or do the homework. She sat down at her seat and got out her books. "Nice jumper did a homeless women lend it to you?" Stacey giggled. Stacey was the most popular girl in school. She got all the boys and went to all the parties and always had the best clothes. Lily opened her book and tried to ignore the laughter around her.
