"They might kill each other."
turn left.
"Anything is better than them avoiding each other."
turn right.
"I second that."
turn right again.
Diana, Cole and Fred walked in single file down a narrow dirt path. The corn lining it is just grown high enough that even if they jumped, they wouldn't be able to see much.
"I can't stand grumpy Gilbert for one day longer, it's become too much for me." Fred announced in a tired voice.
"Maybe tonight will hammer some sense into them?" Cole suggested hopefully.
"I don't know... Anne is stubborn." Diana said sceptically, before taking a left.
"But she has a soft spot for Gilbert right?" Fred said, hesitantly.
"It's difficult with Anne," Diana sighed, "sometimes she acts like she'd rather die than do what that boy says, but in reality... it's different." she struggled to explain her bosom friend's confusing feelings toward her childhood best friend. She and Gilbert had always been close, they were practically siblings, and it was because she saw him as a brother that she knew nothing more could ever come of it.
Abruptly the three of them stopped, as the path split off into three separate ones.
"I say we go straight." Diana suggested reasonably. Cole gave her a look.
"Nuh-uh, we are definitely going left."
Fred popped his head over Cole's shoulder to see the paths, although he already knew which one he would vote for.
"Straight." he concluded.
Cole spun on him.
"You know, when I offered to do this with you two, I wasn't aware I was going to be ganged up on! Of course you would agree with her! You stupid smitten, dumb-" he accused Fred.
"Enough!" Diana broke in. She sighed heavily, turned on the spot and took the right path.
There was a moment of quiet, followed by Fred's yell as Cole pushed him to the side. Then he hurried after Diana, as Fred struggled to untangle himself from the corn.———>>>

Ruby was watching Jerry carefully, as he swiftly broke a stick in half, picked off the spikes, and hurled it down the path for Jesse to race after. She admired the accuracy of his aim, as to not loose it amongst the corn. He was humming a tune under his breath, only verbalising a lyric every so often, and after a moment Ruby picked up that it must be French .
"What does it mean?" she asked suddenly, breaking their companionable quiet.
"The song?" he asked, glancing down at Ruby as she gazed up at him curiously.
"It is French, isn't it?" Ruby continued, playing with her hands out of nervousness, but forcing her self to keep eye contact. She studied the gold flecks that glittered in the deep chocolate brown, and thought that she would trade her blue eyes for his in a heart beat. They reminded her so fondly of sunflowers, and for a moment she wished she could tell him how enchanting she found them.
"It is, it's called, 'quand elle a dansé' which means 'when she danced'." Jerry explained sheepishly. Ruby blushed, and looked down at her shoes.
"I'm sorry I don't know much French. Diana has taught me the occasional word, but nothing significant," she apologised, unhappy that she had found this separation between them.
"I could teach you some, if you like?" Jerry offered, but felt foolish the moment the words left his lips.
Why would the Ruby Gillis want to learn French, just for me? The Ruby Gillis, who looks so exceedingly gorgeous tonight, that every time she looks at me, I feel my entire universe spin, and I'm left breathless.
"You'd really teach me? I'm afraid I'm terrible slow J. I wouldn't want to annoy you." Ruby bit her lip, and gathered enough courage to look up at him again. Now Jerry was the one who was staring.
"You could never annoy me Ruby Gillis. Not ever," Jerry murmured, and Ruby beamed.
"Let's start now!" she exclaimed, practically skipping down the path. Then a thought struck her, how good it would feel to hold his hand right now.
So she did.
Jerry felt the contact of the smooth skin of her palm again his, so warm, subtle yet deliberate.
At that moment, his chest felt bubbly, and his head light, and she was the only one rooting him to earth.———->>>
"You know we can't technically compete with each other if we're on the same team Shirley."
"Unfortunately, I do know that Blythe."
Anne stood opposite Gilbert in a crossroads. Her arms were crossed, and he held the map folded just out of her reach.
"If you know that, why are you so set on reading the map yourself?" Gilbert questioned, squinting down at Anne, one eyebrow raised.
"Well, A: because you're an idiot, and probably can't read maps, and B: because you're an asshole and probably will point us in the wrong direction on purpose." Anne stated her two points, all the while leaning on her tip toes to reach the map. Gilbert was taken aback for a second at her latter comment, and that second was long enough for Anne to jump, snatching it out the air and whacking it over Gilbert's face on the way down. Gilbert rubbed his face with one hand and yet continued to smirk down at her from between his fingers.
"And why would I do that Shirley?" Gilbert asked, but through his confidence, he was genuinely curious about her answer. That was, of course, because she had just described his plan exactly.
"You know why." she mumbled, her eyes flicking up at him over the map for a split second.
"Well, which way captain?" he spoke sarcastically, but smiled in a way which conveyed he was only messing around, and that he also....trusted her? To navigate the both of them.
She looked Gilbert straight in the eye and then said plainly"It's been sabotaged." Anne spoke calmly, but she was fuming and Gilbert could tell.
"...sabotaged?" He repeated, confused.
Anne handed him the useless paper with a sigh.
"It's ruined. Someone's gone over it all in black marker. My bets are on Fred. Did he give this to you, by any chance?" Anne clenched her fists and stared into the corn, as if wishing its existence away.
"You know, I'm beginning to think I should revise your statement form earlier Shirley." Gilbert said as he witnessed the state of the map himself.
"I think we do need new friends."——————->>>>>
