Chapter Sixteen - Hard Facts
As the bright light fades and their eyes begin to adjust, Chimmy notices the adults' looks; they look scared. Nicholas Harrison stood with his mouth gaping open in bewilderment; Peter Jenkins, almost the exact replica except for his eyes, were locked on Barbie's; he knew he was safe.
"More friends, I presume, Mr. Dudley," Rossiland says rhetorically.
"Sorry, but we have to. I had no choice I--" Rozzi stops and realizes she was no longer there; they were alone.
"Who were you talking to, Rozzi?" Chimmy asks.
"No one, let's just get this over with and get out of here," Rozzi says, walking away.
"What the hell is this place?" Harrison asks, still in a daze from the travel. "Who are you, kids?"
"To sum it up quickly... It's the entire history of Granite Bay. How and why it was created and who created it." Rozzi quickly says. "Your last name is Harrison, right?" He asks the detective.
"Yes, my family isn't from here; we were born and raised in Shady Creek since we came into the states," Harrison says.
"You've got a book here, but you have to be the one to find it," Rozzi tells him.
The library was monumental, bookcases that stacked upon each other higher than the eye could see. Every book looked older than the next; as he walked, Nicholas felt he would never find this book. If this book was real, this would explain so much about what's been happening to him throughout time. His father didn't talk much about Nicholas in his journal, nothing out of the ordinary. He heard a faint ringing in the distance, as he kept walking, it got louder and louder. When he reached for the book in front of him, the ringing had stopped abruptly. He draws the text from the shelf to reveal Harrison on the front cover with a strange symbol underneath.
He grabs the book and returns to the others; for some odd reason, he didn't want to be alone when reading this book, even if this meant being surrounded by a bunch of pre-teens. The symbol on the book looked familiar; it felt familiar. It was the same symbol he saw scribbled throughout his father's journal; he was sure of it; he never knew what it meant. Maybe today, he would undoubtedly find the answers he's been looking for all these years—the truth behind his father's disappearance. The damn kid couldn't have been possessed by his spirit; wendigoes are intelligent creatures and feed on one's fears. That had to explain how to get under Nicholas' skin earlier, but not again. This time he would be prepared.
"What does this symbol mean, the one on the front?" Harrison asked Rozzi since he was the one who led him to this library in a waterfall.
"I believe that symbol is for the half breed. Oddly, it doesn't specify what breed you're bound with, but I'm sure the answers are in here." Rozzi says, pointing to the book.
Harrison scrolls through the book slowly, scanning each word with great detail, as if at any second they could disappear. He would often read aloud, saying words such as demon, or half breed, and darkness. The final words he muttered frightened Chimmy and his friends to their core; first true son of The Unseemly.
"Who's the Unseemly?" Peter Jenkins asks Barbie.
"We don't know. What we do know is before Granite Bay--before this universe was made, they were here. They are ancient and mighty." Barbie says to her father.
"It says here that my bloodline is the first of the Unseemly to breed with humans. We were a test to see if we could adapt and survive on this planet in peace." He says with confusion. "Can I take this with me, kid?" He asks.
"Has your name on it, not mine. Plus, we all need to stick together and help each other. That's the only way to beat these cocksuckers." Chimmy says to Harrison closing the book quickly.
"You got a filthy mouth on you kid," Harrison says to Chimmy, rubbing his head lightly.
"I know, but for now, let's figure out what the hell you are. For all we know, you're the threat; it says here you're the son of the unseemly, why should we even trust you?" Chimmy says.
"Because; you need me as much as I need you... And those are the hard facts, kid." Harrison says, ending their conversation.
He continues scanning the pages; the book was more prominent than he expected. Not that he expected anything. Like he told the kids and the sheriff, his family had been from Shady Creek; whoever these people were, didn't defy who he was. He learned more about the abilities that he had and found out who the Unseemly were. This is way deeper than his finding his father; maybe this is what his father discovered and what led to the reason he went missing. Perhaps they found him--his real family. Harrison retires the book into his bag, then joins the rest.
"Sheriff, this is all fucked up-ain't it?" Harrison asks, scratching his head.
"Hell yeah, I'm staying strong for my daughter but--this is fucked up." Peter Jenkins assures the detective.
"What do we do about Douglas?" Gilly asks, finally speaking up. "Remember the kid with the black eyes, had it rough with this guy's wife." He says, pointing to detective Harrison.
"Watch it, kid," Harrison says.
"Sorry to say this, but he's not on our list of people to help right now," Barbie says, sadly.
"I think the smart move is to go after the Kludde first; it's already killed more than enough kids." Peter Jenkins suggests.
"Your right; I've wanted to get that bastard for years. With this new information we gathered from the kids' book of monsters, I'll finally get to take this son of a bitch down for good." Harrison says.
"We need to find out how to remove a Wendigo from someone's body? Do you think it's possible, Mr. Harrison?" Barbie asked.
"It's possible, but the results are never good. In most cases, the victim comes out a vegetable." Harrison begins.
"And the others?" Barbie says.
"Well, the others--the others die," Harrison says casually.
"There's got to be a way to save him with fatal damage," Chimmy says, pacing back and forth.
"Not everyone is gonna make it kid, you had to have known this," Harrison says, staring Chimmy in the eyes.
"Let's just research these bastards and save my friend," Chimmy says, walking back to Barbie.
