The first time Near saw him, it was in the orphanage's cementery. There were rose bushes that happened to be next to the graves. Near liked the roses.

It was the beginning of autumn and Near wanted to see the roses before winter arrived and covered everything in freezing cold snow.

His attention focused on someone in the shadows of the fresh afternoon.

An older boy with pitch black hair, washed out jeans, and a long-sleeve black shirt. The older boy seemed to already be looking back at him.
Too tall for his body, slouching towards the younger boy who only wanted to see the roses.

The older boy's black eyes looked for Near's gaze, but Near has never been comfortable with eye contact.
Only with Mello.

The older boy's eyes traveled to Near's forehead, and then a wide smile appeared on his face.

Near walked away feeling a bit scared.

After that he saw the older boy everywhere.

In the common room everybody would hang out in. In the hallways on the way to class.

Always behind A's shoulder. Lurking in the shadows of the rooms. Standing in corners that nobody would bother to look at. Had he always been there? Near had never noticed him before.

The older boy's name was B.
B for Backup.

He was Backup if Alternative were to fail. They wanted to break her.

B sat behind A in all the classes. Near had never noticed him before. All Near would ever see was the Professor, Mello, and A.
Had B always been there?

B was second in line to succeed L. He proved that in the exam they had for Physics later that week.
Perfect score just like A.
