U-556... You were responsible for her death.
Another tear trickled down the little U-boat's face.
You stood there and watched her die.
U-556 was now sobbing loudly as she continued running.
Bismarck...
Flashback
January 1941
I, U-556 (500 tons), hereby declare before Neptune, Lord over oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, brooks, ponds, and rivulets, that we will provide any desired assistance to the battleship Bismarck (42,000 tons), at any place on the water, under water, on land, or in the air.
Hamburg, 28 January 1941U556
Bismarck laughed as she read the words and the cute drawing accompanying it. "You're too nice, U-556," Bismarck smiled. U-556 saluted the mighty battleship, a wide grin on her face.
End of Flashback
Another flashback (because I can)
"Ark Royal and Renown!" U-556 hissed. She spotted the two enemy ships through the heavy mist, and they were going at high speed. "Out of torpedoes..." she muttered angrily. Without any ammunition to take down the two renowned ships, she could do nothing but submerge and avoid the two enemy ships.
U-556 peeked out of the water, promptly seeing activity on Ark Royal's flight deck. "Bismarck... be safe!" U-556 whispered, knowing that Bismarck would not be able to hear her. U-556 made her decision - since her route and the enemy's route coincided, she surfaced and followed behind the two mighty warships.
Oh, no... She could see star shells shooting out from Bismarck's guns, feeling terrible. It is a terrible feeling to be near and not be able to do anything. she thought. Her fuel was running out. She could only stand by and watch.
When will this be over? the tiny U-boat thought. She watched as Bismarck continued fighting. Bismarck... You can't leave me... Don't leave me now.
It was between 0700 and 0800 in the morning that the U-boat received an order - radioed to her - to pick up Bismarck's War Diary. She passed the order to one of her fellow U-boats, unable to comprehend the rationale behind this order. "Surely not..." she closed her eyes.
"Bismarck... Bismarck!" U-556 looked everywhere, calling out Bismarck's name. "Bismarck!" She could hear the tears running down her cheeks splashing into the water she stood on. "Bismarck, where are you?!"
Noon
The tiny U-boat cried and cried. She quickly sent a telegram to Tirpitz, trying not to cry as she spoke.
YOUR SISTER BISMARCK HAS BEEN SUNK -(STOP)- CONDOLENCES AND APOLOGIES -(STOP)- I WAS UNABLE TO SAVE HER -(STOP)- PLEASE FORGIVE ME BECAUSE I WON'T FORGIVE MYSELF -(STOP)-
U-556's eyes dulled. She closed her eyes and said a silent prayer.
27 June 1941
British corvettes HMS Nasturtium, HMS Celandine and HMS Gladiolus. She knew it was coming.
It came.
The depth charges moved swiftly through the water, hitting U-556 exactly where the enemy wanted them to hit.
Bismarck... I'm coming...
End of flashback
U-556's blue hair flowed behind her, and the girl ran as fast as she could across the meadow. "Bismarck!" she shouted. The ship in front turned, a smile forming on her face. "I'm sorry, Bismarck..." she sobbed as Bismarck hugged the distraught girl tightly. "i just stood there and watched... out of fuel... no torpedoes... I broke my promise to you!" The small U-boat buried her head in Bismarck's stomach.
"It's okay... We're both here now."
