I love a first day back to school, and the fact that it is my senior year made it even better. I felt really good about this year, but something still felt off. I was trying to decide what it was as I walked into the kitchen and made breakfast. I turned around to enter the dining room and had to hold back my scream.
My sister was sitting at the table, like a statue, staring at me. This was extremely awkward, since I haven't seen her since I was ten. She left during her senior year without contact and never came back. I was so mad at her when she did that. I was close to her and then she started high school and abandoned me. All of my anger suddenly came back to the surface, when she said,
"Hey chica." She smiled her evil smile. I didn't know what to say. Of course what came out was my true feelings, as always.
"Oh. Hi I didn't see you there. Hmm how long has it been? Ten years. Omg I kind of missed you. Was It me who forgot to call or..." I said sarcastically, glaring at her.
"Funny. So, I see they still haven't told you. Hey want a ride to school?" She said quickly.
"Who hasn't told me what?" I asked, completely ignoring her question.
"Oh don't worry about it. So, School?" She repeated. Hell No. I was leaving this situation as fast as I could.
"No, I have a ride." I said turning towards the door.
"Well, now it's me. Get in your car. I will take you to school." She muttered quietly, so she wouldn't wake our parents. I looked at her for a moment and then she started walking towards me. I turned and ran out of there, like my hair was on fire.
I didn't even get in the car, I just ran straight to Rachel's house.
"Why did I need to drive you to school?" Rachel asked, as we pulled into the parking lot of Hillford High School.
"My sister is back and wanted to drive me, but I'm not forgiving her that easily and I didn't feel comfortable, so I came here." I said worriedly. Suddenly, I heard the screeching of the brakes and I launched forward.
"What? She's back?" Rachel screeched. As we grabbed our bags, I told her everything I know about before she left. Which wasn't much. I never knew much anyways.
I could hardly focus on school, without thinking about Sophie. I was still pissed at her.
At lunch I caught pearl up on everything. She was pretty shocked, but didn't care to go into details.
Suddenly it was time to go home. For me, that meant an awkward conversation with my parents and Sophie.
I begged my friends to stay at their house but they both told me to get it over with.
I walked in and smelled Pha. I loved that meal, but they never make it in August, because it is too hot outside. So why is it being cooked?
I walked into the kitchen to see my mom and Dad cooking, but avoiding eye contact. Well this is weird.
"Um, Hi" I said sassily. They replied with mumbles.
"So Sophie was here this morning." I said to them. They both turned instantly and looked around. My dad asked where she was and my mom grabbed a sharper knife.
"What the hell are you doing?" I demanded.
"Stay close." My dad whispered. I was so confused.
"Secrets. Secrets are what ruin families." I suddenly heard Sophie's voice, but couldn't see her.
She slowly walked into the room. My dad moved in front of us.
"Tell Hailey the truth!" She yelled getting closer to dad. What was she talking about?
"Sweetha-" My dad started.
"Don't sweetheart me." She yelled. "Tell her." She moved closer. My dad didn't budge. "Tell her or I will." She yelled.
My dad caved and turned around.
"She wasn't ignoring us for eight years. She was locked up. I refused to let her talk to us." My dad said to me. I turned to look at my mom who was looking down. She knew. I was the only one who didn't know?
"Why-?" I started but couldn't finish the sentence.
"Why, what sweetheart?" My dad pressed.
"Don't call me that." I shrieked and pushed my way to the door. When I got there I ran out. I couldn't believe they kept that from me. They lied to me that my sister left without a word. They made me think I was abandoned by my only sibling. I kept running until I hit a familiar house.
Ben Martinez my old best friend's house. I smiled at the thought and then found his number and asked him to come outside. He read it and a minute later I saw him walk down his driveway.
He looked so good, but I couldn't even think about that because of how worried and confused I was.
" Well this has been a few years." He said with a chuckle, but his smiled faded as he got closer to me. " What's wrong?" He asked, seeming worried.
" My family is crazy and they hid things from me and I don't even know what's going on." I said in a puffy voice. He looked confused so I caught him up on everything I know.
For a minute he was silent, just thinking, then he mumbled something quietly, as if he didn't want anyone to hear.
" I will help you find out the truth."
" What how?" I was half laughing and half crying.
" You know I can break a security system easily. We can check out your parents accounts. They have to be paying something to the place she was locked up in." He said.
" Wait, are you serious." I gasped. He nodded and I grabbed him pulling him into a hug. He laughed and whispered into my ear,
" I missed you." Those three words made me remember every detail about our friendship.
The friendship I didn't realize I had missed so much.
What I didn't know was how much danger I was putting him in.
