Chapter 23

The bumpy bus ride was awful. My eyes were wide open the entire time even though I wanted to sleep. My insides were sore and in pain as I had just given birth. It was by sunrise the bus stopped at the local bus station of Lunaris and passengers began getting off.

Gretel stood up as well but I stuck onto my seat, not wanting to leave and join her. Her plans were wicked but she told me nothing during the torturous, four hour bus ride.

"Get up," She whispered, swinging my arm.

I rolled my eyes and grabbed the handle bars before lifting myself off the bus seat. My bottom was sore by sitting for hours straight and all I wanted to do was return to castle with my child and sleep with Luciano. We had so many plans for our future but they were all destroyed now. There was danger at the castle and I never noticed it.

The sky was light blue and the snow had stopped when I stepped out of the bus. I remained frozen on my stop and watched two cloaked women approach Gretel. When they lifted off their hoods, I looked at their faces—hideous and destroyed.

That's what magic did to witches. It ruined them, especially dark magic that didn't involve spirits, instead the force of nature and special occasions of the world. I barely intended to practice magic at the castle and even if I wanted too, it was for my own safety but before I could do any of that, my powers were ripped away from me, along with my child.

"Take her to the Holbert Mansion. I will arrive there soon as soon as I'm dealing with a few town pupil's." I heard Gretel speak to another witch.

The woman nodded her head, "Yes, your majesty. Is there any precautions we need to follow?"

Gretel glanced at me, a wicked smile appearing on her lips as she shook her head, "She doesn't has her magic so there is nothing you need to be terrified off. Just make sure that she doesn't leaves your sight and stay put with her until I arrive."

Once Gretel left, the two women approached me, grasping the either sides of my hand and taking me away from the bus station. I tried to look at them but each time I caught their gaze, my stomach churned with disgust. Maybe it was sickness or maybe it was their hideous features that disgusted me.

One of the women pushed me inside an old car and slammed the door on my face before I could settle down.

I spied on them as they drove away from the bus station and into the gloomy town where there was no ray of sunshine or blessing of God. Everything looked deadly, and dangerous at sight. The buildings were dark in color, broken, and medieval. The humans walking around were dressed in conservative clothing just as the witches. Barely anyone showed their faces.

The town was wretched, as if a hurricane had arrived and ripped all of it's happiness away. It made sense as it was the town of witches.

The women in the car chatted with each other and ignored my presence. They spoke in a language that I couldn't understand and they spoke it well.

A large mansion appeared in front of me and I looked out of the window to get a clearer view. The mansion was painted in black but the walls were well-kept and so was the garden around it. The car stopped immediately and I hit my head against the soft leather of the seat.

"Bitches," I groaned out under my breath, making sure neither of them heard it.

One of the witches hopped out of the car and came to my side to grab me. I pushed her hand away and stood up. It wasn't Gretel and I needed not to be afraid of other witches, they were clearer not stronger than me.

"In you go," The front doors struck open and one of the witches pushed me inside.

The strange scent of herbs and magic hit straight in my head and I quivered. The inside of the mansion was sleek and clean with chandeliers falling from the roof. The interior was modern and the house was spacious.

My muddy boots dirtied the clean tiles and ruined it the moment I was pushed inside.

"Guess you'll have to clean that later," The witch said, glancing at the tiles and then back at me. "Remove your boots and those ratchet clothes,"

"At least I don't walk around wear a cloak," I taunted, undoing my boots and removing them.

The witch got anger, she raised her hand at me and forced me to look up at her, "What did you say?"

"Nothing," I responded, pain splitting my head into two.

"That's right, don't use that mouth much or there will be problems." She released me from her spell and said.

I rolled my eyes at her, removed my boots and then continued with removing my jacket. Just as I handed my clothes to the witch, I heard someone running down from the large, spiral stairs.

"Red!" Lisa shouted.

A smile formed on my face and I turned around to look at her. "Oh!" I slapped my hand over my mouth, unable to control my excitement. "Lisa! I can't believe it," A few tears blurred my vision but I was still able to recognize her.

I couldn't count how long it had been but it felt like a decade after I was seeing her. She quickly ran towards me and crushed into a hug.

"God, I missed you."

I wiped away my tears and pulled away, "How are you? I've been worried since the second I left you that evening. What happened?"

She looked beyond me found the witches talking to each other, her smile disappeared and she said, "Come on, let's go to a room and talk."

"No," The witch said, "She isn't allowed to leave my sight. The queen's orders,"

"Oh, please, Vanessa. I'm just taking her to my room. She won't run away and if she does, you can have my head." Lisa snapped at her.

The witch nodded and then continued chatting with the other one while I went with Lisa into a secured room. The rooms inside the mansion were large and they even had a fireplace.

As soon as I sat down, Lisa placed her hand over my shoulder and asked, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," I replied, "What about you? I'm so sorry about everything. This was all my fault,"

She sat in front of me and I noticed the change in her features. There were strong, dark eye bags on her skin, the color off her hair was fading and her natural hair was appearing.

"It's fine. I don't blame you, Red." She said, giving me a smile. Her hand stretched forward and she patted on mine. "This all, it had to happen. Tell me about yourself. I see you have given birth."

My heart raced upon hearing that, "I did," I snatched in a breath and continued, "She's beautiful. But, Gretel took her away. I only held her a few times and then she was taken."

"What?" Lisa gasped, running to my side and holding me. "She did that? I didn't know,"

"Neither did I until the very last moment. I never thought my child would be in this all,"

"That's horrible,"

"Yeah, and she has no intention of giving me my back my daughter until I do everything she wants me to do," I lifted my head and looked into her eyes, disappointment clear in my tone.

Her brows furrowed and she ran her hand down my back, "It's a daughter? That's beautiful. Don't worry, you'll get her back soon. I promise."
