07: the super spy

"It-it's like I feel what the shadow monster's feeling. See what he's seeing." Will spoke quietly. Mike and Cassie had been allowed to see Will, and were surprised to see the house covered in scribbles and drawings of vines, or maybe a map? Cassie still had no idea what was happening, but didn't bother asking. Mike promised to tell her everything and she trusted his word.

"Like in the Upside Down?" Mike replied.

"Some of him is there. But some of him is here too."

"Like, in this house?" Cassie asked, intrigued by this 'shadow monster'.

"In this house... in me. It's like, he's reaching into Hawkins more and more. And the more he spreads, the more of him I feel."

"And the more you see these now-memories."

"At first I just felt it, in the back of my head. I didn't even really notice it was there. It's like when you have a dream. And you can't remember it unless you think, really hard. It was like that. But now, I remember. I remember all the time."

"Maybe... maybe that's good?" Cassie tried to reassure. Mike nodded.

"Good?"

"Just think about it. You're like a spy now, a super spy! Spying on the shadow monster." Mike added. "If you know what he's seeing and feeling, maybe that's how we can stop him. Maybe all of this, is happening for a reason."

"You really think so?" Will asked the pair. Cassie nodded.

"Yeah. Yeah, I really do." Mike told him.

Cassie and Mike were to sleep over that night. They set up their sleeping bags next to each other and got ready for bed. Will was already fast asleep when they climbed into their sleeping bags. Mike turned to face the girl.

"I guess now I should explain." Mike whispered to her.

"You gonna explain to Max too?" Cassie joked. Mike just frowned at her. She cleared her throat and prepared to listen.

"It started one night last summer. We were playing D&D in my basement."

Mike told Cassie everything about that summer. From the Demogorgon, to Will, to Eleven. Cassie didn't need any convincing, to Mike's surprise. She knew some weird shit was going down in Hawkins from the moment she arrived. Her only concern at the moment was Will. It wasn't long after her and Mike agreed to settle down for the night that she heard his breathing slow, telling her that he was asleep. Her mind drifted from the Demogorgon, to the gate and finally to Eleven. Mike really seemed to miss her. She couldn't blame him  Eleven sounded great, which for some reason, made the girl feel a bit insecure. She quickly dismissed any thoughts about the girl. She was being insensitive. Of course Mike missed her, she saved them.

It was the next morning, and Cassie rolled around in her sleeping bag before opening her eyes. She saw Mike open his eyes too, their eyes locking.

"Hi." she whispered, as to not wake up Will.

"Hi." he replied with a faint smile. The pair continued to stare at each other sleepily, until Will shot up, gasping for air. The pair on the floor jumped and sat up.
