"Party Time"

Before I knew it we were walking through a part of the city I'd never been in before, and after a long day of exploring, my feet were dead. There were less people filling the streets and hardly any vendors filling the air with the smells of their mouth watering food. The sun was going down now, but it still hot as an oven out here.

"Hey...w-where's this party at...again?" I questioned in between breaths as a new drop of sweat ran down my face. We hadn't stopped speed walking through the mildly busy streets since we left the apartment and I was trying to keep up with Justin as he effortlessly sped ahead of me without a hint of exhaustion.

"It's just a small work get together," Justin shrugged as we stopped to cross the street. "I found that out when Vic called earlier," he explained when the sign changed to walk.

I nodded in understanding as we stopped in front of a doorway a couple of buildings down from the crosswalk. I wouldn't have recognized it as a separate building if I passed by with its lack of windows and signs, not to mention it was tiny.

"Well here we are," Justin sighed, still breathing heavily from our walk.

"And where exactly is that?" I asked, catching my breath while glancing over the dark structure in front of us.

"It's a- just come on in," he said, brushing off my question.

I follow him in as he opens the door and surges inside. The first thing I see when I walk in is... well, nothing. I'm completely blind in the darkness, but the air conditioning immediately cools me off as the door shuts behind me.

I stuck my hands out and felt around for the back of Justin's shoulders, which I gripped tightly as we ascended a tall staircase. After a few moments of bumping and whining, I was almost blinded as Justin swung open a door to a brightly lit apartment room filled with people, good smelling food and loud music. The door must have been soundproof because it was like everything came at once, the loud chattering of voices, the heavy bass, and just about everything else.

Before I had time to take it all in, I was being pulled inside by Justin, who was greeted with a plenty of what's up's and fist bumps, which he returned cooly. Relief washed over me as I glanced around the room to see around twenty kids my age lounging around socializing. I was expecting grown-ups dressed all nice, considering this was supposed to be a work get together, so this came as a pleasant surprise. I breathed a sigh of relief knowing that I wouldn't have to act a certain way around this crowd and that I could just revert to the wallflower that I tend to be at these types of gatherings.

I scanned the room for signs of Vic as I followed Justin though the smattering of people and into the kitchen area.

"What's your poison?" Justin asked, forcing me to end my search for Vic and look in his direction. I noticed that he was pouring himself some sort complex concoction.

"No thanks," I shrugged, looking down at the ground. I've never tried alcohol before, so I wasn't sure what it was capable of, let alone what it would do to me and I wasn't about to find out in front of all Justin's co-workers.

"Hey man it's cool," Justin said as he scooped up his red solo cup. "I'm gonna go catch up with some of these people, come join!" he suggested with a smile as he draped an arm over my shoulders. I nodded as he lead me over to one of louder and more obnoxious group of girls. "What's goin' on ladies," Justin said cooly. "This is my buddy Kellin, he's new around here."

All the girls looked me up and down and smiled. Justin introduced me to each of them, and to my surprise, they all actually seemed like genuine people. I mean a they were calling me adorable after all. Before long we were moving on from the girls and onto the next group and then the next.

Bored, I leaned against the wall next to the door the second I could get away. As I watched everyone from a far, I began to wonder what kind of work all these young people did. Maybe they all worked at an amusement park or something. My eyes wandered over to Justin, who was now sitting on the couch surrounded by girls. You could definitely say it looked like he was enjoying himself.

Before long my mind drifted off and I found myself thinking about Vic. I thought he was going to be here tonight. Not that I'd want him to be or anything; only so I can tell him how much I hate him of course. What has gotten into me lately?

I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't even notice the commotion going on beside me. Vic and that Mike guy had walked in, and everyone, I mean everyone, had flocked to them with greetings of every kind.

Rolling my eyes, I take this opportunity to slip through the open door and out into the dark hallway.

Remembering that there were stairs just ahead of me, I made sure not to get too close as I cautiously walked down the hall. I had no idea where I was going, but I did know that I needed a distraction from all the music and the people...one in particular.
