my christmas king december 24th, 2020
"JUNE, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" AWSTEN ASKS. His girlfriend had just set a paper crown on his head.
"They're for Christmas," she explains, brushing his hair out of his face. "They're crowns...cause you're my Christmas King."
When he had first met her near the beginning of the year, Awsten hadn't pegged June Collins to be the type of person that's this into Christmas; But by the middle of November, her Christmas tree was up and all the decorations were out.
"I'm not usually like this," she explains as if she's reading his thoughts. "This into Christmas, I mean. This year it just...felt right. We have so much to celebrate."
She sinks down into his lap and continues to mess with his hair as Awsten's arms wrap around her waist.
"It's been one hell of a year," he sighs, resting his foreheads against hers. "I'm glad I had you to help me through it."
She pulls away and stands up, but before she speaks, she leans back down to kiss his forehead.
"Well, Lucas'll be back soon," she says, hands on her hips. "And he's picking Ivy and Travis up from the airport."
"Tell me again why your sister can't bring Kelso with her?" Awsten asks, sinking into the couch and closing his eyes.
"She's got something about how she never wants him to go on a plane, I don't know. Maybe we'll have to fly out there next holiday to see her."
He pulls the paper crown down over his eyes and crosses his arms. "That or I can just go to New York, get Kelso, bring him back here, and never give him back ever."
"That's a good idea too."
June takes his hands and pulls him up off the couch. "C'mon," she grins. "Come dance to some Christmas music with me."
They dance for a while. Some Holiday classics play, as well as some written (or covered) by their friends, and by the end, the couple's slow dancing.
Holding each other close, Awsten brushes June's hair away from her ear, and mutters, "God, I love you, June Collins."
They'd said it before, but something about this particular instance made June's stomach flutter like she was hearing for the first time ever.
"I love you too," she grins, adding, "my Christmas King."
"Oh, God, that's not gonna stick around, is it?" he groans before kissing the top of her head.
"Well, with that attitude it's definitely sticking around all year," she laughs.
Lucas Cleary arrives back at his apartment with Ivy Collins and Travis M. Riddle following close behind.
In his arms, Travis holds what looks like a thousand wrapped gifts, and Lucas gestures for him to set them underneath the Christmas tree.
"We're back!" Lucas calls into his very decorated home. "Put your clothes on!"
June comes out of the kitchen, holding a plate of cookies, and Awsten trails behind his girlfriend with a dopey grin on his face.
"Enough with that stupid joke," June scrunches her nose up, trying to hold back her own dopey grin.
She holds the plate of cookies out to their guests, and the couple happily takes one of the treats. (Ivy takes three.)
"Mom's recipe," June tells her sister.
"God, they're so good," Ivy sighs, eyes closed.
After dinner, (a lasagna that Ivy helped June make over FaceTime) they gather in the living room once again, this time to exchange gifts.
"But first," June says, holding up a finger.
She runs off towards her bedroom and comes back with four paper crowns, much like the one Awsten is sporting over his colorful locks.
She sets one on Lucas' head, then Ivy's, then Travis' head. Finishing by setting a green one atop her own head.
"Hey," Awsten pouts, "I thought I was your Christmas King."
"Suck it, Knight." Ivy sticks her tongue out at him, before pulling Travis's arm around her waist.
"Now," June begins, walking over to the tree, (but not before placing a kiss on her boyfriend's forehead,) "we're obviously not going to give out all the gifts. We have to save some for tomorrow morning, but Awsten and I picked out gifts for each of you that we want you to open tonight."
She picks them up, hands them out, and then sits down on the floor next to Awsten. He lays his head on her shoulder, and her arms falls around him, her hand moving up to ruffle the hair just before the crown starts.
"We have gifts for you guys too," Ivy jumps up.
She gives her and Travis' gifts to June, Awsten, and Lucas, before Lucas confesses, "So do I."
At this rate, they were going to have nothing to open tomorrow morning.
But this was nice, Christmas with the ones they loved, having the time of their life. Celebrating like children, grinning ear to ear.
"Oh! I almost forgot!" June says. "We made some eggnog when we made those cookies. I'll go get it."
"I'll come with you."
Awsten nearly trips as he gets up, and grabs June's wrist, pulling her back into the doorway of the kitchen. He looks up, and she does the same.
Oh, she forgot she had put that there. Mistletoe.
"Merry Christmas." He gives her a toothy grin before leaning to kiss her, a smile still on his face.
"Merry Christmas..." she grins when they break, "...my Christmas King."
"Oh, God, I hate that nickname," he groans before leaning in to kiss her again. "But I do love you...my Christmas Queen," he adds, sounding a bit unsure at the end.
June smacks his arm lightly. "Don't ever call me that again."
