LOU WOKE UP with her head pounding and deep regret of having drunk anything other than wine.

She kept her eyes closed for a few moments, her mind going over the events of the previous night. It had been fun, more than she had expected when Benny suggested going out.

Lou didn't remember much after the cab ride, she'd fallen asleep in the car, but after that, it all felt like a dream.

A brief memory of lips touching came to mind, but Lou was certain that was a dream. It made her cheeks flush at the thought, she couldn't believe she dreamt of kissing Benny Watts.

She noticed she was still in her dress, and at least that was a small blessing, not that she imagined Benny would do anything with her while she was drunk. Hell, dreaming up a kiss was probably more than would ever happen.

Seeing the hour of the day, almost eleven am, Lou decided to stay in her room and order some food, only leaving to watch Beth's games in the afternoon. She could probably still catch her morning match if she hurried, but Lou didn't think that was a smart idea, and Beth would mind.

She wondered how Benny's games had gone, but deep down she knew he'd won.

The afternoon brought one game, Beth's lasted three hours, her opponent humbly extending his hand for her to shake.

Lou wandered off to the other table garnering attention after Beth's game ended, the table where the winner would join the final match.

Benny was playing black, something even Lou knew was a disadvantage, but even then he seemed to be dominating the board. His moves were made with inherent confidence, not unlike most of Benny's actions. Lou wasn't the only one fascinated with watching, for everyone who had been a spectator to Beth's game moved to watch his now.

Beth herself was standing next to Lou, but only after about ten moves she gently touched Lou's shoulder. "I'm going up."

Lou turned toward her, seeing how Beth was staring intently at the board. She knew her cousin would fare better if practicing on her own rather than watching her opponent's game, and she had no doubt about who would win, so staying was fruitless.

"I'll go with you," Lou said, but Beth shook her head.

"It's fine, stay. I won't be good company either way."

Lou nodded, and Beth left. She turned back to watch the game, and she could've sworn she'd seen Benny deviate his gaze from where she'd been standing, but it was so quick she was probably seeing things.
