knock knock knock

"Oh! that must be them." JJ said, checking her watch. "They're early." She said, opening the door. On the other side stood her entire team. Hotch, Morgan, Rossi, Spencer, Kate, even Garcia.

"Oh my god! Pumpkin!" Penelope all but yelled as she rushed through the door and wrapped JJ in for a hug."

"Hey Pen! and everyone else." They all took their turns hugging the blonde until finally Penelope asked;

"Where's Em?"

"I'm avoiding your hug attacks." She said, peeking her head around the corner.

"I suppose I'll spare you because I know you don't like hugs." Garcia agreed. Emily breathed a sigh of relief before joining the others.

"So... why are you here?" JJ asked. Hotch gave everyone a 'go away' look.

"Why don't you guys come have a seat on the patio? Theres lemonade and biscuits." Emily said, leading everyone towards the patio.

"Come sit, JJ." Hotch said, walking towards the living room and having a seat as JJ followed. Emily sat down beside JJ a few moments later.

"So, whatsup?" Emily said, wanting to get whatever was about to happen over with.

"JJ... Prentiss, I'm afraid something quite difficult has happened. You're husband-"

"Ex husband." JJ corrected.

"Oh. Well, JJ I'm sorry but he's been killed." Hotch said softly.

"He's- he's.... dead?" JJ asked, shocked. Hotch only nodded.

"But I- what- wait. He was murdered?" JJ said, even more confused. "What happened, who found him, where-"

"His body was found in your home. He was shot um- are you sure you wanna know the details?" Hotch asked. JJ only nodded quickly. "He was shot 6 times, the final shot being a fatal one to the head. His um- well I'm not sure what she is, but a woman found him."

"His girlfriend." JJ nodded, her voice cracking. "Is she a suspect?" JJ asked.

"No, not at the moment."

"Thats good, it'd be a waste of resources I don't think she'd do it."

"You know her?" Hotch inquired.

"Not really I- it doesn't matter anyway." JJ shook her head slowly. Emily rubbed her back soothingly.

"Is there anything else?" Emily asked.

"Yes... all of the photographs in the home of you JJ, well they were all smashed. There was writing on the wall as well, um... it was threatening to your life. The working theory right now is that someone went to the house, looking for you, not knowing that you were in Russia. When they found only Will, it angered them which is very obvious, considering the crime scene and the overkill." Hotch explained.

"Wait, are you saying JJ's life is in danger?" Emily asked.

"Yes, now, when I told you that you may be coming home it was before I realized, whoever killed Will, may not know you're in Russia. This might be a safer place for you. The risk however is if they already know about this apartment somehow. We don't know if Will told them anything before he died or if they figured anything out from your house. I believe the best course of action would be for you to suspend this mission and to switch republics but remain in Russia. Of course its completely up to you." The information JJ was getting all at once was overwhelming. She found herself floating up into the clouds of her thoughts, unable to process everything being said.

"JJ, honey." Emily said, tapping her shoulder. "What do you need?"

"Um yeah, I- I guess I can go to a safe house if thats what you think is best." Her voice was full of an autonomic tone, not uncommon with shock. "B- but you said me. I want Emily to come too... we- we can work on cases with you guys from afar." JJ said.

"Of course, I'll come with you."

"Well usually we wouldn't unnessecarily put someone into hiding but I think a friend is as important to you staying safe as a safe house itself, so if Prentiss is truly okay with it then yes, I'll pull some strings." Hotch agreed. Emily gave him a look of gratitude. "Well, I'll leave you alone, you can join the team whenever you're ready." Hotch smiled reassuringly. Emily stood up to follow him as well.

"Emily-" JJ said.

"Yes?"

"Don't leave." She asked, with a single tear running down her cheek. Emily only nodded and sat back down beside the blonde. She ran a thumb over the tear, wiping it away.

"It's gonna be okay." Emily promised. The truth was, Emily didn't know if it would be, but in this moment, all she wanted was to end the blonde's pain. JJ only nodded in response, taking another deep breath in as more tears fell. "Oh sweetheart, come here." Emily said, pulling the woman in for a hug. "I'm here for you." She ran a hand through JJ's hair. The moment was soft and tender, but also harsh. Because although there was a warmth passed through Emily to JJ, the circumstances of the gesture made it more painful than anything else. Emily however, knew the sharing of pain was the strongest seal of a friendship, relationship, partnership, of a team. And somehow, she knew JJ was all these things to her.

Later that day, the two had rejoined the team. They would be staying for 3 nights before heading home. Hotch figured a sense of normalcy would be beneficial before their lives turnes even more upside-down. They were all sitting in the living room.

"Well theres plenty of room for all of you if you'd like to stay here." JJ assured everyone.

"Hotch and I already checked in at the hotel across the street." Rossi said.

"Yeah so did this kid and me." Morgan said, gesturing to Reid.

"This kid and I." Spencer corrected, which earned him a swat on the head.

"Ooo yay! Just the girls!" Penelope exclaimed, rather loudly.

"Well, I'd love to catch up with you two anyway, Emily?" JJ said. Emily didn't respond. In fact, it appeared Emily wasn't even present.

"I'll go find her and make sure its okay." Kate offered, wanting to make sure it was okay before she decided against booking a hotel.

"Oh okay." JJ agreed.

Emily was in the bathroom, staring into the mirror. It seemed everyday now, worse and worse things happened, to better and better people. She could handle a brutal crime scene, or a gun to her head, but seeing people she loved, in pain, was never something so easy for her. There was a soft knock at the door, she wiped a tear she hadn't noticed falling and sniffled her nose, before opening the door.

"Hey Emily we were just wondering if Garcia and I were okay to stay here tonight."

"Oh yeah of course, as long as JJ's find with it." Emily agreed, still trying to get a good grip on herself.

"Are you okay? Its alot to process, I know." Kate sympathized with her.

"Oh... I'm okay, just feeling bad for JJ thats all." Emily assured her with a nod.

"I can tell you really care about her." Kate smiled softly.

"More than she'll ever know." Emily said quietly.

"What do you mean by that?" Kate questioned.

"Oh... nothing I just- yeah I really care about her." Emily lied. Kate however, was a profiler, and a damn good one at that. She knew the agents choice of words wasn't random, but she also knew it wasn't her place, nor her problem.

"Well, shes lucky to have you?" Kate assured Emily, giving her arm a squeeze. "Now come on, I think Rossi's cooking us all a meal." She said, and Emily thought to herself,

damn, if only JJ was cooking it
