Character: Bell

About the story:

Living by her wits Jane's life is far from normal, she has her one steady fixture in her life, her beloved Dad (he has raised her as his own since her mother's passing), everything else is expendable until one of their cons goes bad; they meet an elderly lady (Bell) at the train station and she makes them an offer too good to be true; as if fate had finally dealt them a good hand but the meeting is not coincidental.

They are offered a home, Dad a job and the security they so desire in the quiet little seaside town of Whitstable, but not all is as it seems.

Bell is shadowed by her loyal boys (the feral boys) the menacing youths riding around on their bikes with hoods up, lurking in the shadows. They are actually Deaths' Hounds of Hell that do Bells' bidding and are under strict instructions to watch over Jane.

Jane is overwhelmed with premonitions, nightmares and flashbacks of her mothers' passing which are triggered by her arriving in Whitstable. She knows there is more than meets the eye when it comes to Bell.

Hello Bell.  May I call you Bell or do you prefer something else?

I've had many names and been called plenty of things but I'm known in Whitstable as Bell.

Welcome and thanks for agreeing to talk to us today.

You're very welcome.

Can I get you something to drink? Water? Soda? Coffee? Wine? Whiskey?

You can never go wrong with a strong cup of tea (dash of milk and two sugars) but occasionally I do enjoy a little tipple for medicinal purposes, one of the benefits of owning your own pub - there is always a bottle of whiskey stashed away for when you need it.

I agree!  One tea coming up. While we wait, tell me a little about yourself?

Where could I possibly start, I trust only a few people, I've loved even less but I've lost more people than I can bare to remember. I live my life by my rules and for that I've paid a high price.

Wow. Your story sounds interesting.  Let's start with some basics. Where do you live?

I've lived in many places but for me home has and will always be Whitstable.

Do you have any jobs or hobbies?

I own the Devils Den (my pub) I don't really have the time for hobbies but I do like to give back to the community by being a role model, I'd consider myself a mentor for my boys (the feral boys) I keep them on the straight and narrow.

What are some of your likes and dislikes?

My likes are simple my home, family, friends and my boys.

My dislikes the stuffy pompous Vicar but I'm pretty sure that is a mutual feeling.

What is your greatest fear?

Loss.

Ok. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

I'd wish to have been born when females had more power over their minds, bodies and choices. Freedom should never be taken for granted. But there is no point crying of spilt milk.

Very true, on both fronts. Are you happy we know your story?

I'm happy for you to know, what I'm prepared to reveal to you. Do we ever truly know a person.

Good question. A few rapid fire questions. Are you in love?

Try to avoid love as much as possible much like the common cold.

Are you married?

I'm widowed, I do not intend on marrying again - far less complicated just taking lovers.

Do you have siblings?

I think I can safely say when god made me he broke the mould - so no I have no siblings (I think he'd consider one of me more than enough).

Tell us about someone important to you?

Jane - I see such hope for her future that I didn't see in my own. She is strong but not to the point it's tainted her ability to love. She reminds me so much of my daughter.

Do you have a pet?

Yes my beloved boys (the feral boys) or as Jane calls them my dogs - unlike actual animals they never pee on the carpet, are able to walk themselves and are fiercely loyal.

Is there anything you want to say to your fans?

The Devils Den is open seven days a week, with the best beer in Whitstable, full of friendly locals and beautiful barmaids but be warned any trouble makers will be met in the dark alley by The feral boys and "politely" asked not to return.

Sounds like a place to visit. Before we go, can we look forward to reading more of your story?

There is always more to be revealed and more to come, no one knows what tomorrow brings.

Bell, that's it for today.  Thank you for speaking with us.

Thank you and goodbye until our paths cross again.

I look forward to it.
