Hi there. What should I call you? Do you prefer a nickname?

Good morning. Detective Dana Reynolds of the Plainvale Police Department. Dana is fine.

Welcome and thanks for agreeing to talk to us today.

You're welcome.

Can I get you something to drink? Water? Soda? Coffee? Wine? Whiskey?

Coffee would be perfect, thank you. I have not been sleeping well.

We'll put on a fresh pot.  While we wait, tell me a little about yourself.

What would you like to hear? Most of Plainvale knows about me now. My reputation is... well, it's not the reputation I would have ever dreamt for myself. I am the first detective employed by the Plainvale police department to come from the docklands area. Is that a source of pride for me? It should be, but – people have a way of reminding me of my background, and not in a positive way. I am Dana Reynolds, I am 28 years old, and you will probably know me as the 'suicide detective' – Nicholas Waites' is the seventh self-murder I have investigated in the past year.

Seven?  That's not a good trend. Where do you live?

I live in Plainvale, a town along the South coast of England. I was born in the docklands, the poorest part of the town, and for eighteen or so years, I woke to the smell of fish and tar every morning. My father worked on the harbour, and I joined him. But when the War began, I decided I wanted to do more. Circumstances intervened and I was accepted into the police department. Chief Inspector Pearce believed that I could help his men gain more access into the docklands area, which he thought was a troubled place. It turns out that this whole town is troubled. I had no idea of the kind of things lurking in Plainvale.

Do you have any jobs or hobbies?

My whole life revolves around my job, it seems. Once upon a time, I was able to step back from it. Now, it follows me wherever I go. We opened up something terrible with this case, and we can't – we can't put it back in its box. Obsession is a strong word, but I have gone above and beyond with my job, and sometimes, I'm not even aware I am doing it. But I made a vow, not only to myself but to Miss Waites – and I will not go back on it.
