Just another night, he rested his head in his hands. He breathed roughly and then stood up, taking another puff of his cigarette that was placed between his fingers. The light in his bedroom was damp, he walked over to the bed to sit down next to the woman who had fallen asleep a while ago. Her brown curls was spread over a pillow and he put out the cigarette by throwing it into a bottle with beer. He laid down next to her while wrapping the arms around her. A vague sound escaped from her and she woke up, turning to face him. He stared into her dark eyes and she stared back at him.
"What is your name?" he asked her.
A smile pulled on her lips. "Rose." she said. Rose. Rose. He thought, No, that's not it.
Even if it was a week ago he met that girl who he didn't know her name he still tried to figure it out.
"Rose, say a common female name." he said.
She raised a eyebrow at him. "Silly, there are loads. Why?"
"Nothing important." he answered as he kissed her forehead.
Everyday since that night he cursed himself for not asking about her number.
When Rose had yet again drifted to sleep he found himself thinking about that girl again. It was all that came to his mind, how she purposely didn't tell him her name. And how he could be so stupid and forget it.
-
He knew that trying to find her apartment will not be easy as he drove in his car around her neighborhood. He tried to fit the image of the building in his mind but they all looked the same. He had been driving for about thirty minutes, asking around but no one was able to tell where she lived. Nor her name.
His descriptions was to vague, there are loads with pale blondes in this city. She could be anyone. Never had he imagined himself in this situation, chasing after a girl -who was six years younger to be fair- in his car. Never had he imagined a night like theirs leading to something he wanted to find out more about.
Or did he only want to know her name?
He pulled at the brakes as he saw a dirty blonde girl walk out of a gate, her arms wrapped tightly around her body. She walked with light feet and when Matty jumped out from his car he could hear her heals clicked to the solid ground. He rushed up next to her. The cold air freezing his cheeks.
"Hey." he breathed out. The girl jumped of surprise, looking at him wide-eyed. A smile greeted him.
"You found me." she said, her hands hanging loose by her sides.
He nodded his head, feeling a bit embarrassed by this whole searching thing. But he didn't answer her, she was right but he couldn't admit that he was looking for her. She nodded her head to his silence and then looked ahead. He immediately stopped, surprising her again.
"Where are you going?" he asked her then, looking her straight in the eye.
She blinked a few times. "To work." she said. "I have to pay my bills by myself. I have no parents that takes care of that." and when she said that she sighed. Matty wanted to ask what was wrong with her parents but he figured to offer her a ride instead.
"I can drive you there." he offered.
A genuine smile grew on her lips and she nodded. "Thank you."
They turned around and made their way to Mattys' car. She sat in the passenger seat while he drove.
"What is up with your parents?" Matty asked her while putting a cigarette in his mouth with one hand. He brought his lighter to it and lit it up. He puffed out the smoke and rolled down his car window so it could escape. The girl leaned in, taking the cigarette from his hands to smoke it herself. He looked over at her for a while then back to the road. She puffed out some smoke and then she said:
"Well, I don't know." she smiled. "They left, I guess. So I basically live alone, my collage sucks and so does my work. I have merely any money." she chuckled now. "I mean seriously, who leave their child like that?"
"What about your brother? Why isn't he living with you."
She turned to look out the window, handing the cigarette to him. She thought about what to say, like she wasn't really sure.
"It's not that easy. He do come sometimes, but, I don't know." she sighed now. "Matty?"
He looked at her. His eyebrows furrowed. "Yes?"
A genuine smile found their way to her lips also making her eyes smile.
"Do you want to be my friend?"
He almost choked on his cigarette. Not to offend her, but that it came with such surprise. Why would she want to be his friend? He doesn't have friends. Especially not from the opposite sex. Not just friends. But she was different, she had patience. And he had patience with her.
He nodded his head. "Of course." he pressed a smile to his face. She instantly wrapped her arms around him, causing him to hold the steering wheel with both hands so he didn't lose the control.
Or maybe he was already losing it?
