"They'll be on the lookout for us now. Five of us won't be enough. We need all six." A scout mentioned to Runaan as they watched from their spot hidden in the thick canopy of the forest. Runaan sighed and said,
"We will be stronger as five.""I'm sorry Runaan." Rayla said looking up at the older elf who said nothing, much to the annoyance of his husband. Rayla simply looked down shooting a quick glare at the guard that made her fail so miserably.
"Hey, could I borrow your, uh, sharpening thingie?" On screen Rayla sheepishly asked another of her group though anticipating the answer.
"Whetstone." The older assasin deadpanned, though didn't look up from her sharpening.
"Yeah, that." Ralya replied, a bit chipper that she had not been yelled at.
"No." And her faint smile vacated her face at the sharp answer. Rayla looked up at a sudden hand on her shoulder and was met with Runaan's unhappy face.
"Come with me."Everyone watched not knowing what was going to happen. Callum watched with a sense of sympathy he had not felt towards an elf before, being the castle screw up himself- he knew how it felt to be ostracised by one of his mistakes. He tried to place a comforting hand on her shoulder but snatched it back seeing Rayla's glare and slightly bared teeth. "Ok, nevermind. I like my hand attached to the rest of me." Raylas glared some more but Callum got the sense that it wasn't out of anger at him but just because she was upset and confused." Oh shut up prince-y you don't know nothing."
"Ezran, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said what I said. I'm sure everything's going to be fine." Callum was met with silence but continued outside Ezran's door anyways, "Come on, later you can call me a jerkface, and I'll do the crazy jerkface dance for you. It is a dance of stupitude and sorry-ness." Still he was met with silence, this time taking the hint and turning to leave promising to be back, "Okay, well, I'm going to go grab some books for our trip. We don't have much time, so I'll be back to help you pack in a few."
The screen changed back to the forest which hid the elves. Showing Rayla and Runaan alone.
"I thought you could do it, Rayla, but I was wrong."Rayla sat on the edge of her seat nervous to hear what her pseudo-father had to say. Soren in his ever mature way laughed at her getting told off.
"You're not wrong. I can do it." She pleaded back with Runaan.
"I know you've never taken before. I brought you because you're talented. Maybe the fastest and strongest of any of us. But it takes more than that. There's an instinct. A moment of truth. And in that moment, you hesitate."
Rayla was clearly distressed at his disappointment and tried to convince him the only way a teen knew how, argue back the exact opposite of what was just said.
"I won't hesitate again."
"You will. I see now that you're still just a child. Your heart isn't hard enough to do whatever it takes."The audience winced at Runaan's harsh words. Rayla was extended some sympathy from Claudia and Soren both of whom knew the desperation to prove themselves to their father. King Harrow found himself with some things to say on the matter,
"If you know that she is still just a child why take her on an assassination mission? Why force your child to be a murderer?" Rayla stood up in her seat, whipping her head around to face Harrow,
"That would be because elves raise thier children the right way. I'm was born a moonshadow elf in a time of war, I'm going to kill at some point in my life-mau as well get an early start." Humans and elves both clearly saw the culture barrier in the room and Callum was not happy that yet another thing kept people divided when he had come to see Rayla as a person herself."I messed up. I know I did. Because I let that human go, we're all in danger. But that's why you have to let me make it right."
"No, it's too late for that."
"But, I bound myself, my heart for-."
"You'll be unbound when the job is done. Your role now is to stay out of the way. You will wait here, quietly. If we're not back by sunrise, go home." Rayla looked through the canopy to the looming castle and made her choice.
"I can fix this."
