There were no more than three hundred and seven humans left in the universe. After the sun had winked out, blasting the Earth into infinite winter, wrapping the land in a blanket of ice, sleet, and snow, the remaining government leaders decided it was time to go. It was time to leave the once beautiful, green, and blue planet that had sustained us for billions of years. And they had finally found a new planet, hundreds of times larger than Earth and hundreds of light-years away, but just as beautiful.
Thora Pickney wasn't sure if she was lucky or not that they had opted to take all the survivors. At the moment, the seventeen-year-old was asleep in cryo, along with the rest of the people on The Albatross space station, save for the newly awakened crew. Unlike most of the other passengers, she was being prepped for wake-up.
Before the Blackout, Thora had been arrested. She had tried to tell them that it wasn't her fault but nobody ever believed her, not even her older brother, Blake, who had been her idol and best friend as a kid. Because of her record, they had found her dispensable enough to send down to the ground for an exploratory expedition, along with twenty-nine others like her. Up until now, all of them had been considered worthless, sentenced to a life of servitude to the rest of the Albatross passengers. But, if they succeeded, if they were able to find out if this new planet was survivable, they'd have their records expunged. The crew thought it was a fair deal; manage to save us, we'll save you.
