She and Kenji carefully made their way into the ship. Fisher was huddled in the furthest corner, as far back as you could possibly go. His knees were curled up to his chest, his head hiding in his hands so that they couldn't see his face. She could tell he was crying from the fact that his shoulders were shaking violently.
She sucked in a breath as she crouched down beside him, placing a cautious hand on his knee. He didn't look up or say anything, even when Kenji asked him if he was okay.
She shared a concerned look with Kenji before she leaned back, sitting on the patch of floor in front of him.
"I know you probably don't want to talk right now," she started, even though her mind was already drifting back to her brother. "But I'll be here when you do feel up to it."
Finally, he glanced up at the two of them, his lip trembling and tears streaming down his cheeks. His face was blotchy and red in patches.
"I hated her. Why-" he broke into sobs again, unable to finish his sentence. Before she had even thought about it, her arms were wrapped tightly around him, his face tucked in the crook of her neck. He stiffened at first but eventually relaxed in her arms. Kenji rubbed his back but didn't say anything.
"Even though you never got along," said Kenji, "she was still your mother. It's okay to be upset right now." She felt him nod against her neck.
Running one hand through his slightly matted brown hair, she whispered softly in his ear, telling him that he'd be alright and that he had people he could talk to if he needed it.
Finally, he managed to get himself under control, still staring at the ground as if he didn't fully comprehend the depressing news he had just received. He sniffed then looked up at his friends, fierce determination and something a bit more sinister suddenly swirling within his eyes.
"We have to do this. For Dell and all the people, we lost today. We need to find somewhere safe so that something like this will never have to happen again. Where the last of the human race can grow into something our ancestors from Earth would be proud of."
She stared at him, eyes wide. Why had that speech, that seemed to have come from the very depths of his heart, come forth at that particular moment? It was sudden and out of place, especially for someone like Fisher, who usually put his emotions in a vault, locked it, and threw out the key.
Even with the randomness of the speech, he was right. It wasn't just about the criminals on the ground, it was about the few family members they had left, and their friends, and all those in between. It was for Blake and it was for Dell. She had to make them proud, even if they wouldn't be there to see it.
"You're right," she told him, her words coming out quiet, barely even a whisper. All she could think about was Blake. If he was dead and she had never been able to prove to him that she was innocent, that she'd been framed... the thought alone was enough to make her heart ache deep in her chest. "We do this for them. And for the many generations to come. They'll be here because of us."
Fisher got to his feet.
"For the sake of humanity," he said as he walked from the dropship.
"For the sake of humanity," Kenji thought aloud, frowning subconsciously. "It has a nice ring to it, huh?" She looked at him like he was crazy. How could he be thinking about catchphrases at a time like this?
"For the sake of humanity," she muttered sarcastically before heading outside. They had a lot of work to do before they got the rest of the Albatross passengers on the ground.
