prompt: y/n sees sherlock playing the violin and asks if she can try to play.
age: 13
Y/N had always been a big music lover. When she was a little kid, Sherlock would always play the violin to put her to sleep. Now that Y/N was older, she wanted to maybe try playing an instrument.
On a chilly November morning, Y/N stared longingly at Sherlock's violin in the corner of the living room. The delicate yet stable instrument shined in the morning sunlight, it's brown color filled with maroon undertones.
"What are you staring at?" Sherlock asked, his deep and cold voice making Y/N jump. She loved her dad, but he could be terrifying sometimes.
"Oh, nothing." Y/N said, knowing it was in vain. There was nothing like having a father who could deduce her every thought and emotion.
"Why were you staring at the violin?" Sherlock asked. Before Y/N could respond, Sherlock began deducing.
"You obviously weren't zoning out, your eyes were too focused and particular. You most likely don't want to hear me play it, so that means," Sherlock snapped his fingers, coming to a realization. "You'd like to play it. Is that right, Y/N?"
Y/N flushed red, and gave a subtle nod.
"Well, I'm sure we can arrange something. Why don't you finish your breakfast, you have school. When you get home, we can progress further."
Y/N nodded once more, and got up from the table. It was time for school.
______________
When Y/N walked back into 221b, she was hit with the smell of burning hair. Sherlock was doing yet another experiment in the kitchen.
"Y/N! Good to see you. Get me the sodium, it's on the counter near the fridge." Sherlock exclaimed.
Y/N sighed, having been used to this,
and grabbed the bottle, handing it to her father.Sherlock added a few drops in, and stood in silence watching over the bubbling beaker for a few more seconds.
"Alright, then." Sherlock clapped his hands. "Go sit on the couch. I'm going to get the violin for you."
Y/N did as she was told.
Sherlock held the violin bow out in front of him. "This is the bow. The brown part up top is the wood, and the bottom is the hair. The metal box on the end is the Frog. Remember, never touch the hair. Now, hold the bow like this."
Sherlock guided Y/N's fingers into the right position.
"You use you dominant hand to hold the bow. Make sure your thumb is slightly bent. Now, take these two fingers and put them here."
Y/N thought the position was a little uncomfortable, but it almost felt natural to her.
"Finally, you put your index finger here, and your last finger will just sit on top."
"Like this?" Y/N asked.
"Yes, but angle your hand toward your index finger. Good job." Sherlock responded.
Y/N felt a surge of pride. Sherlock rarely spoke any words of encouragement, but when he did it was always special.
"We aren't going to be playing anything today, but I think we're off to a good start. What do you think?"
Y/N beamed. "I think so."
"Very good. Now, come to the kitchen, I need your help with an experiment."
Y/N smiled and stood up.
