People and police were running after them.
But out of everybody, Kacy's eyes darted to Mr. Briggs and Edna.
Edna's face seemed to be full of confusion. Mr. Briggs: fury and anger.
Kacy couldn't believe this was happening. Her legs didn't move when she tried to get them too. They were stiff. But soon Anna was pulling Kacy along, each ones heart beating fast.
"Kacy!" screamed Anna, her voice full of fear. "Kacy! Come to me!"
Kacy could tell that Anna was crying. She could tell even though she wasn't looking at Anna. Kacy's eyes were plastered in Mr. Briggs and Edna.
"Kacy!" screamed Anna again. Kacy tried to talk. She tried to reassure Anna. But nothing came out of Kacy's mouth. It seemed as if it was glued shut.
Anna continued to pull Kacy along. They were moving quickly, trying not to be caught by this mob of people.
"Anna," whispered Kacy, choking. Kacy's legs started to function and so did her mouth. She turned to look at Anna, who's face was drenched in tears. Anna didn't say anything, but she hugged Kacy.
Kacy nodded, then ran. And ran. And ran.
She didn't know waht was happening. It was all to confusing. Just like the day she first came in to Briggs Manor. It was just to confusing. kacy tried to think of something calm and peacful. Something that made her happy. But nothing came. She realized that she probably didn't have any good memories, nothing that was nice ever happened in her 16 years. Nothing.
The thought of that made Kacy ponder deeply. She wanted to remember happy times. Maybe she had happy times with her parents she couldn't remember. But she didn't know who her parents were. Kacy remembered Madison telling her who her parents were.
Why can't I tell anyone who my parents are? thought Kayc to herself.
Then, suddenly, she stopped running, her face went pale, and sweat trickled down her forehead.
"Rana," she whispered. "Rana!" she screamed, darting in the direction of the parade of people. Right before she reached them, Kacy turned left where she had last seen Rana.
And there Rana was, police holding both of her arms and pulling her up the hill.
"Leave her alone!" screamed Kacy. The police men's attention turned to Kacy. Rana shook her head at Kacy and mouthed the words 'run'. But Kacy shook her head refusing to leave Rana here.
"Let go of her," screamed Kacy, her voice cracking. The policemen obediently dropped Rana who splashed in to the river. They then came running for Kacy. Kacy sighed in relief though. They hadn't hurt any of her friends yet and she intended to keep it that way.
"Well, we're fine with that," said one policeman, throwing his hands in the air as Kacy and the policemen slowed. Kacy faced them.
"You're the real prize," said the other policeman. Kacy took a deep breath and closed her eyes to think.
"What do I do? What do I do?" she whispered so quietly that the only one that could hear her was herself. Kacy felt a sudden tug on her arm and knew she had limited time. Then, she did some quick thinking, and turned to the policeman that had grabbed her.
And Kacy did what she thought she'd never do. She punched him with all her force and power.
The policeman stared at Kacy awestruck.
"How...why...what?" he muttered, rubbing his jaw. The other policeman tried to help is comrade which gave Kacy the time to escape. She ran towards Rana. Kacy hoped that Rana wasn't injured like Kacy had injured herself falling in to the river. Kacy ran down the hill and Rana was lying on the dirt on the bank of the river.
"Rana!" cried Kacy. "Are you alright?"
Rana slowly stood up and limped over to Kacy. She fell down but Kacy supported her.
"Just...just a few bruises," mumbled Rana weakly, obviously in lots of pain. "Just a few bruises."
"A few?" gasped Kacy, looking at Rana's wrecked body. "You look like a wolf tormented you!"
Rana smiled weakly. Kacy wasn't sure why. Nothing in this situation was funny. Nothing.
Kacy started to help Rana up the hill when the policemen started running down the hill. Rana turned and her emerald eyes stared in to Kacy's matching eyes.
"Run," said Rana, her voice low and deep as if trying to keep a secret. "Now."
"But-" Kacy began to protest. She couldn't run because Rana was with her and she couldn't leave Rana her in her state.
"Drop me. Now," demanded Rana, her voice clear and full of pain. "Now."
Tears slipped down Kacy's face.
"No," said Kacy, keeping firm hold of Rana. Then, Rana shook her head.
"I didn't want to have to do this," she shoved Kacy aside and fell. Kacy screamed.
"No!" she went running down for Rana but knew it was no use. Kacy hesitantly- after many glances back- ran away, wiping tears away.
The thing she didn't know, though, was that she had just left her mother.
