Kacy was worried. What had happened to Rana? Was she alright? Was she hurt? Was she dead?
Kacy thought about Rana's expression as she fell down the hill and in to the river. She thought about how she had felt as she screamed as Rana crashed in to rocks as she fell.
Kacy felt as if there was a hole inside of her- as if something inside of her was missing. Like that one missing puzzle piece you couldn't find. The one that connected it all.
She remembered how Rana had made her feel as she spent her short time with her. Kacy had felt like a 6 year old. She had felt loved.
Kacy had felt loved for the first time in ages.
But now all that love was gone and she felt lost.
Anna had her head resting on Kacy's shoulder. They and Ryder, Lillian, and the other boys had found a cave, much like Rana's. It was dark. Darker than Rana's cave that Kacy felt happy to be in. They were all shivering. They were drenched because the rain had started pouring down when they were finding this cave.
Ryder was whispering to Lily, glancing at Kacy multiple times. Kacy started getting curious.
"What?" bursted Kacy finally. The suspense was getting her, "Why do you keep on looking at me?"
"Should we tell her?" asked Ryder, directing hsi question to Lily.
"I don't know," said Lily honsetly, a hint of pity in her voice. "Is she ready?"
"I think so..." said Ryder thinking. He then turned to Kacy. "Kacy," he started.
"What?" asked Kacy, itching with curiosty. "What do you need to tell me?"
"Well," started Ryder, clearing is throat.
Anna's head suddenly popped up.
"No!" said Anna very suddenly. "Don't tell her Ryder, don't."
"Anna!" said Kacy. "I want to know!"
"But you can't know! You're not ready!" exclaimed Anna. She started pleading Ryder not to tell Kacy.
Ryder and Anna began to fight. Lily was huddled in the corner of the cave.
Kacy shook her head. "I want to know!" she shouted, breaking the fight between Anna and Ryder. Ryder glared at Anna, his nostrils flaring.
"I'm going to tell her," he growled.
"Fine," said Anna. Kacy could feel the tension in the cave.
"Kacy," Ryder directed his words to Kacy, his voice deep and quiet. "You are a experiment. You are a 'pet' to Mr. Briggs. I was a 'pet' to Madam Blake-"
"What do you mean?" asked Kacy, completely clueless.
"I mean you're a toy," said Ryder sighing.
"What? Explain?" Kacy was so confused. She was a pet? She was a toy?
Kacy noticed that Lily was still huddled in the corner, and for the first time her facial expression wasn't brave or sour, it was scared and soft.
Ryder yawned. "Lets talk about it tomorrow. We should sleep."
A the 16 year old teenagers lied down and wrapped the blankets- that Anna had so wisely brought when running away from camp- around themselves, and slept.
