Jamie's POV

"Yes! I can get some more sleep! We are so done with this lab work, good job partner! Working with you would always get me good grades.” Pete exclaimed way too happily when we got out of our laboratory.

“I’m hungry, let’s get lunch?” Our classmates decided to join us for lunch.

While waiting for our orders, my phone beeped. I furrowed my eyebrows as I’ve gotten a message from an unknown number.

I’m one that gets very suspicious whenever I receive a call or message from numbers that aren’t registered on my phone. We can never be too careful these days.

I do not know what has gotten into me today that I decided against my usual habit of ignoring these messages from unknown numbers and opened what I have just gotten.

“Hi! Congratulations on your presentation today. I heard that you and Pete got good feedback from your professor and the laboratory team!” the message read.

I wondered who it could be, but it mentioned Pete. Then it suddenly dawned on me that I said yes to giving my number to Sean yesterday.

A hint of excitement passed through me. Figuring out what I should say. Then my phone beeped again.

I decided to turn it on silent mode as I guess I will be getting more?

“Uhm, this is Sean. Sorry I forgot to say it on my first message. I got your number from Pete yesterday.” His second message said.

I was staring at my phone and I cannot seem to fathom what to reply.

“Say thank you.” Pete who’s sitting beside me suddenly whispered. Then laughed at my reaction.

Internally I am screaming. Screaming of excitement or frustration? I don’t know.

“Thank you.” I sent back, this has to be the worst reply I could ever send to someone who seems interested in me.

I saw a typing icon on our message screen. Is he not having his lunch? What could one say in a very short seemingly disinterested response like “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome?” his reply said. That question mark at the end put a smile on my face. Witty. Then a new message popped in.

“Am I bothering you right now?” maybe this guy can hold a conversation after all. Interesting. I decided to reply.

“Not really, I am just having lunch with our lab mates.”

“Maybe I should message you later when you are done with your lunch. =) enjoy your lunch.”  That felt a little sad for me.

“I will, you enjoy your lunch too!” How can I ever be this cold, geez.

He did not reply after that. I guess he feels that I am not interested in making new friends?
