AN: This chapter came after prayer, and for me, this is the best chapter I've written. I thank you all who have continued to read and extend a warm welcome to you newcomers. I thank God, especially for this chapter's direction. I hope you all enjoy this chapter as much as I did writing it. I'll see you all next chapter. As always, read, review, and enjoy.
Pagliacci-11
As Takeo and Akiko were approaching their new home, Takeo quietly asked, "There's one thing that came to mind. Why are we designated 'Civilian Sector' when you served as the insider in Decay from practically the beginning?"
Akiko replied, "I'll explain once we truly get the kids to bed, not now."
"With how much Hiroki's been sleeping, I don't see that as genuinely a viable solution."
"Oh, Takeo, there are ways to get your way. You just must innovate. How's Yumi?"
"She's sleeping soundly. I don't know what the boss did to her, but either way, she's sleeping and sleeping pretty peacefully too."
"That's good. Considering all she's gone through lately, we're going to give her the time she needs to come back to earth as it were."
Soon, they pulled up to their destination. Takeo looked at it, a touch forlorn, "It's a bit smaller than I thought it would be."
Akiko gently nodded. She knew it was something of a downgrade from the house that North-Gate had provided for them prior. The house was a single-story instead of two, but the tradeoff was it was a bit longer, so it very easily could work out. "Well, if you remember, our first home to set up roots in Japan was much the same."
"Yeah, but how long did it take to get the proper house under the clauses of operation? A long time, Akiko."
Akiko sighed as she popped the trunk open and moved some of the boxes towards the door. As she approached the door, her phone vibrated, and soon the door automatically opened. Surprised at this, Akiko stepped inside, and feeling for a light-switch, she found one and flipped it.
What greeted was a considerably basic but still nicely furnished home. There was a dark brown couch along the wall of the living room; grey carpet was on the floor; modest wooden TV platform was at the head of the room, upon which a modest twenty-inch flatscreen lay with the glow of a cable box on a lower shelf of the platform; a night table just to the right of the door. As Akiko headed to the kitchen, she found another light-switch and turned it on to reveal the kitchen.
The kitchen, much like the living room, was modest. White linoleum tiles served as the floor; the upper and lower cabinets were made of a nice standard wood with the countertops made of a wood-topped with an admittedly disgusting gray imitation slate. The oven and the refrigerator were traditional. The table was a charming wooden circular affair with a leaf possibly being inserted, as Akiko could tell by the slit down the center.
Akiko set the package down, opened the fridge, and found it pleasantly stocked with a deli platter of cheeses and meats, a few beers, and several bottles of water and a small note.
Akiko took the note and read, "Apologies for the relatively plain setup, but you'll find this house will suit your needs at present. This is just a temporary station until your work history from prior employment can be successfully transferred to your new locales. The utilities have been paid for the upcoming month because you'll only be here a month. Call Forward Station Valtrass once you arrive. Enjoy the platter.
Mengele.
Akiko smiled as she thought on this, "No wonder this place is bare-bones." Heading back to the car, she had found Takeo had unpacked all the trunk and carried Hirkoki inside to lay him on the couch.
