Leo carried you into the infirmary, and you tried to avoid his eyes the whole time.
No, I can't do this to him. I can't hurt him like this, you thought. He laid you down on a hospital-like bed across from Annabeth, who was currently being treated by Will.
"There you go," he said, gently laying you down.
"Uh, thanks," you said softly. He looked at you with concern heavy in his expression.
"Are you okay?" he asked. You gave him a sarcastic look like 'do I look like I feel okay?' He rolled his eyes playfully with a smile on his face and corrected himself, "I mean emotionally."
"Oh," was all you could say. You looked down at your foot, which was starting to have a pulsing pain like all the blood in it had been changed to liquid pain. Every time your heart pulsed, so did the liquid pain, pulsing and pulsing until the tears welled into your eyes. You tried really hard not to cry in front of Leo because who wants to cry in front of their crush (especially when you're trying to stay away from him and he'd do something really cute). Thinking of that made you feel even worse emotionally. He knelt down next to the hospital bed and grabbed your hand, but you pulled away. You couldn't take it anymore. Hurting him was hurting yourself, too, and you couldn't go on like that.
"Hey, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice so desperate you'd almost think that he was about to cry, too. You looked over through you tears to see if Will was going to come over anytime soon, but he was just taking Annabeth back for a cast. No hope there. You had to talk. Your time was up.
"Look," you said, your voice cracking. "You're a really sweet guy and all but..." You faded off. How do you break that to someone? Oh, by the way, I like you a lot but I can't be with you because some random dream showed me your ex-girlfriend and I'm just going to end up hurting you anyway, so better now than later, right?
No. Not that easy.
"But what?" He asked desperately. You looked at him, and his big brown eyes were looking like a sad puppy's. You couldn't do it. Words were floating around your mind, you were shaking, your foot pulsing, your eyes tearing up so much now you couldn't even see Leo anymore.
But you had to.
This was for him.
This was for him.
"I...I can't do this!" You were crying even harder now. Leo looked like he had been shot. he literally stumbled backwards and almost fell over. But you regretted your words. You meant you couldn't tell him you just wanted to stay friends...but he took it the wrong way.
He regained himself as fast as he could, and tried to hold his chin up. it didn't work.
"Well..." he seemed like he was going to make a smart remark or something, but instead he just said, "I'll see you around, then..." His voice cracked, and you thought you could see his lips quivering a little through your tears. You tried to say something, but he stormed out of there so fast, you couldn't catch your breath. When Annabeth and Will came back, you had stopped crying, but your eyes were still puffy. She was now sporting a blue cast on her leg, and her eyes were puffy, also. She had crutches, and it didn't look like she was going to be walking anytime soon.
"Alright, here's some pain meds, and do you want to wait for your friend?" Will asked Annabeth while he nodded towards you.
"Uh, sure. Only if she wants me to," Annabeth tried to smile, and you tried, too, but it hurt so bad. You couldn't be happy anymore. Pain demands to be felt, but oh man was this painful. You'd give anything to not be in this situation, but there was nothing you could do. All these gods and all this magic, and somehow you still managed to have boy problems. Go figure.
"It doesn't matter much to me, whatever you feel like," you said. Annabeth nodded and plunked down next to your bed.
"Okay, that works. Don't forget to elevate it-yep, there you go. Now it's your turn."
"Oh boy."
