I swore to myself I'd actually listen to the painstaking math lesson but looking out the window seemed more interesting.
I fixated my attention on the students freely roaming outside and noticed a student in an oversized grey hoodie. He gripped a pale blue envelope tightly in his hands. He looks so in love with her. Gazing longingly at a long-haired girl by the soccer field, the boy stepped forward. My heart grew excited at the expected confession.
He suddenly paused and glanced at the pale blue envelope. After a moment of contemplation, the boy turned his soles to the trash can behind him. "No don't do that!", I yelled abruptly. My teacher paused her lesson and the rest of the class turned around. "S-Sorry I didn't mean to-"
"No need to explain yourself, Byul." My teacher shook her head and continued writing on the whiteboard. "You're lucky class is ending soon." I slouched in my seat as the last five minutes of class dragged on. The bell finally rang and the students hurriedly rushed to break. "What was that all about?" My best friend Jinyoung sat in the empty seat beside me and planted a strawberry milk carton at the edge of my desk.
She slid a small straw towards me and sighed. "You should really be paying attention. Your math rank sucks." I stabbed the straw in my strawberry milk and chuckled. "As if you're any better.", I teased. "Let me see your report card."
Jinyoung rolled her eyes. "My point is that your mom's not gonna be happy." Hearing the word "mom" ruined my mood. I sipped my strawberry milk and pouted. "Step-mom", I corrected. "And I could care less if she was mad. Not like she or my dad actually care." I huffed and stood up. "Just thinking about them stresses me out. I need some fresh air."
_________
I headed towards the soccer field when someone suddenly grabbed hold of my waist. "Where are you going?", asked my boyfriend for almost a year. Soobin wrapped his arms around my waist and planted an unwanted kiss on my cheek. "Getting some fresh air", I replied.
I noticed a couple of female students watching us in the distance. "You guys are so cute!" The girls sent a thumbs up to me and I watched Soobin bask in their compliments. He flashed a toothy grin and the girls squealed in excitement. "We're great aren't we?", he asked. Annoyed, I elbowed him in the side.
"Why do you show so much PDA whenever there are people around?" I pushed Soobin aside. He sighed and squeezed my hand. "Byul, we're respected so might as well give a show." I furrowed my eyebrows. The ego he has is incredible.
"Is that all this relationship is to you?" I crossed my arms but Soobin just smiled. "Lighten up, okay? You know I love you." Bullshit. He patted my head before taking off and I watched his back disappear in the distance.
Our relationship was exciting at first but everything changed once Soobin's entitlement grew. He was Daehwa's star swimmer and I was... well I was just rich. Our relationship was "meant to be" according to the entire school, yet nothing seemed to be fulfilling anymore. It became a loveless love and I grew tired of it.
Now I need double the fresh air.
I finally made it to the soccer field and inhaled the fresh air I desperately yearned for. The crisp fall breeze felt amazing on my skin and the gentle winds brought peace. I sat on the nearby bench and noticed a pale blue color in the corner of my eye. "Isn't this the letter?" I reached for the envelope and pulled it out of the garbage can. It is. "So he really did throw it out."
"BYUL!"
Startled, I tucked the letter in my sweater pocket. "Yeah?" In the split of a second, I felt a throbbing pain at the top of my head and several students came running in my direction. I opened my eyes and a soccer ball was now sitting by my feet. "A-Are you okay?" Several students dropped to their knees and begged for forgiveness.
To be quite honest, I wasn't okay. But there wasn't any point in making the situation any more embarrassing for me and them. "It's fine, really." I got up and reassured everyone I was fine. "You don't have to kneel, it's okay." So much for getting fresh air. I stumbled back inside and my vision grew blurry. My temples pulsed and my vision blurred even more. I couldn't make out the person in front of me but I grabbed onto his arm before completely blacking out.
__________
I woke up to a sweet aroma and an excruciating headache. "How you feeling Byul?" The school's nurse planted a palm on my forehead. "You don't seem to have a fever so that's good." I slowly sat up and met eyes with a random student sitting in the chair across from me. "I-I'm fine..."
The student kept awkward eye contact and I wasn't sure what to say. Thankfully, the nurse continued talking. "Taehyung said you collapsed on him so he kindly brought you here."
"...How embarrassing." I thanked Taehyung by bowing my head. That means he carried me here... Lovely. The nurse handed me an ice pack and set ibuprofen on my side table. "I need to print your files so I'll be back soon, alright?" The nurse left and the awkwardness ensued. "Sorry for collapsing on you... I appreciate you bringing me here though."
Taehyung nodded in silence and pulled the grey sleeves of his hoodie down. I peered at his face and something about him seemed so familiar but I couldn't put a finger on it. I focused on Taehyung's hoodie and then everything clicked. "...Hang on." I pulled out the blue pale envelope in my pocket and his eyes grew wide. "Does this belong to you?"
Taehyung came closer with a concerned look on his face. "Why do you have that?" So he does speak. I wasn't quite sure how to sanely explain my eavesdropping so I left out some minor details. "I saw you throwing this away earlier." Taehyung furrowed his brows. "So you fish it out of the trash? I threw it away for a reason."
"It seems weird, I know." I held the blue letter out to him. "But you were so close to giving this to-" Taehyung quickly grabbed the letter from me and shoved it in his pocket. "Well, I decided not to...So don't worry about it." He stood up, bowed, and left without a single word.
