The girl woke up on the hard forest ground. The leader had ordered them to make beds of leaves to make their sleeping place more confortable, but it didn't stop the cold from seeping through her thin shirt.
She was startled when an Asian boy suddenly sat up beside her, gasping. He looked around at the sleeping teenagers, and eventually his eyes found the girl. "Hey. You look like you got a good night's sleep," he said with a smirk.
In fact, the girl had had a restless night. She had trouble sleeping knowing that they were trapped inside giant walls with only minor provisions. She couldn't understand how this boy could be sarcastic at a time like this.
"Shut up," was her only response. She stood up and walked towards the leader.
"Sorry, Princess. Only trying to break the ice." He followed her as she crouched down to gently wake the leader up.
"Don't call me that." She silenced the boy with a look before he started to speak again. She gently prodded the leader.
The leader grunted as he woke from his slumber. He stood up slowly, then viewed the two standing before him.
"What do you propose we do?" The leader looked inquisitively at the Asian boy.
"You're supposedly the leader." The Asian boy responded. "But I suppose we should explore the rest of the clearing. Maybe see what's beyond those walls."
The leader nodded. "Let's not wake the others yet. We need to keep them calm. I'm struggling not even knowing my own name: I can't imagine how crazy it would be with twenty freaked out teenagers."
The girl laughed quietly as the three headed out of the forest. They kept up a brisk pace as they trudged through the fields.
"Let's check out the wooden building," the leader said, pointing towards the old home-like building they had seen before they had settled in to sleep in the forest.
As the leader held the creaky door open for the girl, the Asian boy suddenly halted.
"Minho!"
"What?" Both the girl and other boy stopped as well.
"My name. I remembered! Minho!" He laughed. "I guess I'm not gonna be an idiot for the rest of my life, not even knowing my own name."
The girl smiled. "Do you think we'll remember our names, too?" She felt a bit troubled that she couldn't remember anything from her former life, while Minho had this new knowledge that connected him to his past.
"I certainly hope so." Their leader patted Minho on the back. "Now let's get a move on."
The trio thoroughly searched their building, bringing supplies they found back to the entrance. The whole process took a few hours.
"Well, this means that whoever put us here doesn't want us dead." The leader crossed his arms, looking over the many boxes full of packaged food, weapons, medicine, and tools.
"Bloody right they wouldn't want to kill us." The blonde-haired boy from before suddenly appeared at the doorway. "If they wanted us dead, they wouldn't have given us weapons. But I wonder what we would need to defend against."
Minho nodded. "Maybe we'll find out if we explore the rest of this...area."
"Isn't it more of a clearing? Or a glade?" The girl added.
"Glade. I like it." The leader smiled.
"Cool. That's what we'll call it, then." The blonde boy backed out of the building.
The group gathered outside of the building. "What do we do now, mighty leader?" Minho addressed the dark haired boy with a smirk.
"How 'bout we split up. Minho and Blondie go check out the other smaller buildings, while, uh...the girl and I go see what's outside these walls." The leader seemed awkward in his last statement.
The "Blondie" looked doubtful. "Do you really think it's wise to go outside those walls? Maybe whatever these weapons are supposed to be used against is out there."
"We'll be safe." The leader glanced towards the girl, giving her a reassuring look. She felt slightly offended; she didn't need protecting.
The group split up. The leader and the girl each took a spear with them, just to reassure the blonde boy. Minho and the other boy left to explore the other buildings and the rest of the Glade.
"Ready?" The leader asked the girl.
"Ready." She smiled.
They approached the exit to the walls surrounding their new safehaven.
The setting sun shone down on their backs as they ran out the doors, away from the Glade.
