Amy. . ."Amy!" The girl exclaimed. Those eating breakfast around her stopped to look at her. "Amy. My name's Amy."

"Congrats!" Nick's bright smile greeted her from across the table. "Now I don't have to refer to you as 'girl.'"

Amy laughed. "Ha, ha. You liked it though. Made you feel smarter than everyone, knowing your name." She poked fun at him.

"Only a little bit." The corners of his lips turned up again before he took another bite of the eggs the cook, Luke, had prepared for them.

All the Gladers had high spirits, and chatter filled the building they had designated as their eating space. The Runners had told them all how they were likely to be able to cover the whole Maze today, and find an exit.

"What will you be doing, today? Do you really have a specific job?" She asked Nick.

"My job," he said with his eyebrows raised, "is to keep everything in order. But what I've been doing is helping to garden. Those fields are really large: the Track-hoes can use my help."

"Well I'm glad to know you've found a way to help." She smiled and placed her fork on the table. "I'd better be off. Newt and I will be covering the same section today."

Nick looked down at his plate, averting his eyes. "Have fun with Newt," he said. "Stay safe."

"I'll certainly do my best," she said with a smile. She left the dining hall to find Newt.

Amy expected to find Newt in the Homestead. The Homestead was the name that Alby had decided on for the old wooden building. "It's like home," he had said.

She entered the Homestead, and walked down the short flight of stairs to where they had put the packs, weapons, and supplies they would need to go running. Spears, knives, and other weapons lined the walls of the room, and Newt stood there taking a few down for other Runners, while Minho handed out water bottles and sandwiches that Luke had made.

"You know, we're gonna run out of these shuck sandwiches and all our food soon." Minho tossed his water bottle in the air and caught it.

"We'll make do with what we have until we can get the crops grown," Newt said in his thick British accent.

"Let's get out of the Maze, and we won't have to even worry about that." Amy picked up her spear and packed the sandwich and water bottle in her pack. "Let's go, slintheads," she barked over her shoulder.

Newt and Minho grinned at each other as they followed her up the stairs.

"Amy," Newt had a horrified expression on his face. "The walls . . . they've changed."

"What do you mean, they've changed?" She almost screamed as she snatched the maps from his hands. She then looked up and around at the towering walls around them.

"No, no . . . We were supposed to get out. Newt, how could they have changed?" She felt the tears start to stream down her face. "We were supposed to get our lives back. . ."

"Maybe we've read it wrong." Newt took the maps back and tried comparing them again. After a moment of silence, he commented, "We would've heard them moving."

"They must have moved when the walls were opening, or closing."

Newt looked to the ground, a frown of frustration on his face.

"Come on. We have to map it again. We'll run faster this time: we'll find a way." She turned the paper over and started drawing on the back.

The two soon left again, running through the endless labyrinth.

~~~
When Newt and Amy arrived back in the Glade, there was chaos. Gladers were yelling at John and Minho, who had got back first, telling them there must be a mistake. They simply couldn't accept the fact that the Maze could have changed, and they still hadn't found an exit.
"I'm going out there! I'm gonna find a way out, since you shuck-faces can't!" One voice proclaimed.
"Give me the map!" Another yelled.
Amy handed her map to Newt before running to the forest.
She ran and ran until she almost had reached where the trees met the walls. The water of a small pond splashed about as she dropped to the ground as her tears fell.
Then she heard the sound of footsteps behind her. "Amy?"
Her head lifted, recognizing Nick's voice. "Right here."
He approached her, and sat down next to her. "What's going on back there?" She asked him, trying to hide her tears.
"Minho went with some Runners to the room we did the mapping in last night. I sent the rest to eat dinner."
"I'm glad they're sort of under control," she responded.
"I guess. Luke's food will definitely calm them down." Nick's warm smile made her fell better.
Amy looked down into the pond in front of them. In the still water, she could see her reflection for the first time.
She had dark, wavy hair, with about the same shade of eyes. She was astounded; she had never even thought about what she had looked like until now.
"You're beautiful." Nick looked down into her reflection as well, and then looked back at her.
She couldn't understand why he would tell her that. "Thank you, I guess." She felt her cheeks burn.
"Um, I think I'd better go eat dinner. I was running all day, you know." She stood up, not sure how to deal with this side of Nick.
"Of course." He stood up with her, rubbing the back of his head. "Sorry if I, uh. . ."
"It's alright." She gave him a small smile before walking back through the forest.
Idk if I made their relationship advance too fast, but there it is. Thanks for reading, guys! -Gillian
