The quiet pitter patter on the window woke him gently from his long sleep. A perfect drowsy day to just curl up near the fire with Y/N. Jin stretched his arms wide, getting caught in wires that seemed to be running off his chest and arms. That's when a steady beep could be heard over the soft rain hitting the window. Jin regarded the wires in confusion. He then scanned his surroundings, starting with the tiny succulent on the windowsill.
This wasn't his room, these white plaster walls with their multi print pictures on them. They weren't his prized paintings from his wife.
"Jin?"
Slowly he turned his head to see Namjoon standing in the doorway. The boy rushed to the side of his bed, grasping his hand firmly. A huge smile on his face.
"Jin, you're awake!" Namjoon exclaimed happily. Jin smiled at the overwhelming happiness of his best friend. He just wasn't quite understanding the situation he found himself in.
"Where am I?" He asked, searching his friend's face for an explanation. A sad look fell upon him. Namjoon patted Jin's hand before speaking softly.
"You are in the hospital."
"Why?" All Jin could remember was falling asleep next to Y/N, then waking up in this unfamiliar room.
"You were in an accident."
"Accident?"
Namjoon sighed, getting up he peeked out the door.
"Excuse me! He's awake!" When Namjoon thought about it. That's probably the first thing he should have done was get a nurse or a doctor to come check Jin out. He was just so excited to see him awake.
A short nurse with pink scrubs came shuffling towards him.
"Did you say he's awake?" She asked excitedly. Namjoon nodded, the nurse clapped her hands and rushed into the room. She had been the one who looked after him while he was here. So for her to be able to finally see him awake made her so happy.
Rushing into the room she nearly ran up to hug him. On nights that just seemed to drag on she would find herself sitting next to his bed reading stories out loud or simply telling him about her day.
Now he sat up looking right at her. When he was asleep he looked like a prince from a fairytale. Now he looked like one of those handsome men you'd see in a vogue magazine. This made talking to him a bit complicated now. Her shy demeanor took over.
"H-hi! I'm your nurse, Y-Y/N." She introduced herself.
"My nurse?" He questioned. Y/N nodded, checking the monitors. His heart rate was slightly elevated and his oxygen levels were a little low. She would need to get a doctor in to run some tests.
"Y/N, when did you become a nurse?"
The question threw her off, making her forget what she was about to do.
"I've been a nurse for three years now."
Jin knitted his eyebrows. That wasn't possible.
"Is this some kind of joke?"
Y/N observed Jin's confused state.
"No...?"
Both Y/N and Namjoon looked at each other.
"I'll get a doctor."
"No! Wait!" Jin called out, grabbing her arm before she could run away.
"Do you remember me?" He asked, his eyes full of hope when Y/N looked down at him.
"I'm not sure I understand."
"Y/N, please."
Gently she removed his hand from her arm and ran from the room. Jin called after her while Namjoon tried to calm him down.
"Jin, stop. It's okay. You've been in a coma. It's okay."
Jin frowned, his head was starting to hurt. Nothing made sense. He just wanted to wake up from this dream. Falling back against the pillow. A doctor walked in with a huge grin on his face.
"How are you feeling?"
"Confused..." mumbled Jin, staring down at the IV in his hand. Namjoon started texting away on his phone, looking up at him periodically.
"Confused?"
"Yes..."
"Well you've been in a coma for a little over a year now. You have recovered well. With some rehabilitation and catching up on the times, you'll be right as rain."
The doctor's voice was way too chipper. Jin's eyes wandered to the door where Y/N stood watching everything. Why was she acting this way?
She moved away from the door when she saw him looking at her.
"Your parents are on the way." Namjoon informed, not looking up from his phone. Jin sighed, rubbing his temples. The sound of the rain drawing his attention. The water hitting the pane and rolling down disappearing like the life he thought he knew.
"I would like to run some tests if you are up for it." Asked the doctor, while pulling out a notepad, jotting down notes.
"What tests?"
"Normal procedures for someone who has been in a coma. Making sure everything is functioning normally now that you are awake." He smiled reassuringly.
Jin nodded, going back to looking at the droplets on the window. The lifespan of a raindrop is so short. His wife ran from him, trying to convince him that she was something she wasn't.
The memory of her sitting in her studio painting, her soft hair riddled with colorful flecks of paint was his favorite view. How she would smile when he'd hug her from behind.
He didn't like this dream. He wanted to wake up. However, the longer he was in it... the less he felt that he would wake up.
Some time later Jin's parents walked in. His mom had tears streaming down her face. A look of pure happiness taking over when she laid eyes on her son. His father stood stoic, but if you looked close enough you could see the hint of a tear in his eyes.
"My baby!" Cooed his mother, engulfing him in a warm embrace. He sighed heavily. He loved her hugs. They always made him feel better when he was younger. Now he wanted to be held by the girl hiding just outside his hospital room door.
"Hi mom. Dad." He nodded at his dad who returned the gesture. Namjoon scooted out the door unnoticed by everyone aside from Jin.
"How are you feeling, Baby? Are you hungry? Thirsty?"
Jin shook his head, his mom seemed much younger now. She didn't have the salt and pepper hair or the crinkles beside her joy filled eyes.
"We are going to run some tests once visiting hours are over." Informed the doctor as he went to leave. "If you need anything before then call the nurse."
"Thank you." Jin stared at the door long after the doctor had left. Only hearing tidbits of what his mom was saying.
"Did you hear me?"
"What?"
"Your sister got married and your cousin Sean moved to Canada. He needed a fresh start, eh!" His mom's little quirk made him laugh.
"Mom do you know, Y/N?" He asked randomly. Jin's mom tapped her chin.
"It's a beautiful name, can't say I recall the person it belongs to though."
Jin frowned. He didn't like this. Not one bit.
