Summary: The Doctor sends Elise and Clara on a day trip by themselves.

The Doctor set the TARDIS in flight.

"So, where are we going?" Clara asked.

"You and Elise are going somewhere," he said.

"Alone? Together? Why? Do you need us out of the way for some Timelordy thing?"

"Oi. Elise is a Timelord too!"

Clara narrowed her eyes. "Do you just want to be alone with the TARDIS?"

"No. I want you and Elise to be friends, so I'm sending you somewhere together."

"I don't understand. We are friends."

The Doctor shook his head. "It may seem that way, but Elise sees you as my traveling companion. She had a friend at one time, but...anyway. I thought you two could have a girl's day. Get to know each other a bit better." The Doctor pressed a button on the console. "Ellie, could you come to the control room?"

A minute later, Elise entered the control room.

The TARDIS landed.

"Have fun you two!" he said, shoving them outside.

The TARDIS dematerialized, leaving them standing on a street corner.

Elise crossed her arms and said, "What's going on?"

"The Doctor thought we could use a girl's day out."

Elise looked at Clara.

"Okay, guessing you don't know what that is. You know, get your hair and nails done. Do some shopping?"

The Timelord continued to stare at her.

Clara sighed. "Alright then. Come on."

They walked until they found a salon.

"When my mum and I had girl's day out, we'd start with our hair."

"I'm not cutting it," Elise told her.

"Fine. You can just get a blow out."

"A what?"

Clara walked her over to one of the stylists and explained what Elise wanted done to her hair.

The stylist washed her hair and kept commenting on how lovely her hair was and how much she loved Elise's rose tattoo. Most of the time Elise forgot she had it. She had no idea why it had shown up in this regeneration. Perhaps she'd find out later.

The stylist dried and curled Elise's hair, so it looked like it normally did.

Clara got her hair trimmed and straightened.

The two stopped at a nail salon next.

Clara chose a pretty purple color for her nails, while Elise chose a blood red color.

Elise didn't want her fingernails painted, so Clara settled for just a pedicure, so the Timelord wouldn't feel so alone.

"So, did your mother never do this with you?" Clara asked Elise.

"I don't have one. I was orphaned as a child and met the Doctor. He took me in and raised me as his own." The story Elise told Clara wasn't a complete lie. She just left out certain details that Elise didn't think Clara deserved to know. "The only mother I've ever known was River and I don't see her that often."

"River?"

"River Song. My father and I always meet her out of order." Elise went quiet and Clara could see that talking about her surrogate mother made her sad.

Clara reached over to put her hand on Elise's, but Elise pulled away. Clearly Elise's moment of vulnerability was over. Clara could see that Elise's hard exterior only served to mask the pain of losing people close to her, but underneath she was in pain and hurting. But she didn't want anyone to see it.

"My mum and I used to gossip about boys while we had our nails done. So, any men on the horizon?" Clara asked.

Elise blushed. "Um, no. But I met a guy in that coffee shop. The one we went to after meeting you for the first time."

"Oh! Did you get his number?"

"No. I didn't even get his name."

"Well what did he look like?"

"He had dark hair. But his eyes... God, his eyes were a gorgeous blue."

"Do you think you'll ever see him again?"

Elise shrugged. "Probably not. We're hardly ever in London. But that's okay with me."

"But...but don't you want to fall in love?"

Elise went silent again.

Clara sighed and settled back in her chair. She was getting nowhere with the Timelord.

Elise had told her a little bit about her childhood and then immediately shut down, which told her a lot about Elise. She didn't like getting close to people, so she kept herself and her emotions shut off from the world around her.

Clara needed to find a way to get her to open up more.

After grabbing some lunch, the two found a shopping mall.

Clara dragged Elise into H&M, one of her favorite stores. Clara started throwing clothes into Elise's arms and led her to the fitting room.

Once alone, Elise looked at herself in the mirror. All she could see was Amy and her father. She didn't feel like herself anymore.

Clara lightly knocked on the door. "Alright in there?"

"I can't do this."

"Elise, what's wrong?"

No longer staring at Clara, Elise let herself pretend it was Rory on the other side of the door. "I miss...everything. It isn't fair! Why do my father and I have to lose everyone we care about! Don't we deserve to be happy!"

"Ellie, open the door."

Elise unlocked the door and Clara entered the dressing room, wrapping her arm around the crying Timelord. Clara wasn't River, but it felt nice to be held.

Once Elise calmed down, Clara helped her clean herself up. "I want us to be friends. I know you don't feel comfortable going to your father with some things, so that's what I'm here for. Now come on. I think I know a shop that's more fitted to your tastes."

They left H&M and Clara led her to a shop called "Hot Topic". The walls were covered in band tees and almost everything was black and leather.

Elise got a few pieces and then they went to Sephora and had their makeup done.

Clara chose a natural look, while Elise chose a more edgy look with blood red lips and a dark smoky eye.

Looking at herself in the mirror, Elise saw herself. She didn't see her father, or Amy, or River. Simply just Elise.

They were walking back when they heard the TARDIS. It appeared a few feet in front of them and the Doctor stepped out.

"Wow."

Elise looked completely different. Her curls were wild and her green eyes almost looked like they were glowing.

"I know. She looks great, right?" Clara smiled, but she could see Elise shrinking back into herself.

The Timelord still wasn't completely comfortable in her own skin, but that would come with time.
