Running, Running

Down the sidewalk
Past the trees
Away from the cars
I am running, running

Over the white fence
Into our yard
Up to the porch
I am running, running.

I open the door
To our house
I'm so happy
To be home

Even happier than I was
On my birthday
Because home
Is not school.

Mama sees me
Out of breath
She wants to know
Why I was running, running.

I don't answer
Because the tears in my eyes
Make it hard to see
And the knot in my throat
Makes it hard to talk.
