Red Lightning

Dada picks me up
And holds me close
The way dads do
When you're really, really scared.

I listen to the sound
Of his heartbeat
Because right now
I'm really, really scared.

I must've seemed calmer
He asks what's wrong.
My voice is small
So I whisper really, really quietly:

I saw something.
No one else could see
Not because they weren't looking
But because they
Aren't me.

Dada's voice is quiet, too:
What did you see?

It was like lightning
Except there were
No clouds anywhere
And the lightning was red.

It scared me
And no one else
And now they think
I'm a freak.

Dada squeezes me tight
And kisses my forehead
He tells me
To get some rest.

I remind Dada
It's the middle of the day
But he says
Sleep makes everything better.

It helps you to think straight
And solve problems
And you can dream
And that's the best thing of all.

Then he closes the curtains
Turns out the light
And says he'll get me
When it's dinnertime.

As he leaves the room
I catch a glimpse
Of a tear in his eye
Which scares me even more
Because my Dada
Never
Cries.
