CHAPTER 002.
STORMS.

STORMS IN THE Scorch were getting worse and worse. Neve knew the best thing to do was find cover, but there was hardly anything in sight. The only shelter she could see was an old factory looking building a ways away. The clouds were moving quickly, raging across the sky.

Neve did the only thing she could, she ran as the grey overtook the sun. She was kicking up sand, still holding the fabric over her face so that the dust didn't blind her. It was both fascinating and terrifying how quickly the world around her changed from a blazing desert to a cold, dark stretch of land. Next came the rain, hard and cool on her back. It soaked through her clothes in mere minutes. She turned around for only a second to see a tornado ripping apart the ground.

Scorch storms were ruthless, never kind, never yielding. Thunder crashing in her ears, lightning lit up the sand. It was happening too fast, and she was too far from cover. She didn't stop even though her lungs were begging for air. She really had to learn how to run farther, faster, without having her chest feel like it was screaming every time.

Boom! The thunder left her ears ringing. Zzzz! She could hear the electricity of the lightning as it hit the ground in front of her. Whirr! The tornado whipped across the sand, looking for a target. Vroom! There was something else. Amongst the orchestra of chaos there was the hum of a vehicle.

Neve turned around once more to see a van speeding across her line of vision. She didn't know if they could see her, she didn't know if they were safe, but she started waving her arms at them anyways. It would take time to get to the building, time she didn't really have as the lightning could hit her at any moment. Every second was a risk.

The car drove past her, ignoring her completely. She let out a defeated breath, a tear running down her cheek in helplessness. She was tired of being alone. Not just without the gang but without her mother, without a friend. She didn't dwell, she just kept moving, running towards the factory yet again. Just then she heard the wheels of the vehicle tearing up the ground. She turned her head to see it making an abrupt U-turn, heading back her way. She stopped and changed directions, moving now towards the van.

She was being saved. Saved from- A flash of lightning blinded her. All she felt was a shock run through her body and her mind went dark.

--

Neve woke up to a pounding pain in her head. She was laying on a cold floor, not sand. She almost smiled at the relief of not being in the grainy coarse sand anymore, but the pain in her head didn't allow it. She peeled her brown eyes open. She was in the trunk of a van.

Her first instinct was to panic, to break out at any cost, but then she remembered the events that brought her there. The storm. She struggled to her knees and looked out the nearest window. They were still in the middle of the Scorch, being chased down by a tornado. She let out a heavy breath. Wherever she was headed, she knew it was better than being out there for the time being.

"You're awake," someone spoke behind her. Neve whipped her head around. There was only one other person in the trunk, and he was wearing a mask that obscured his face. They only thing she really noticed was his gun, that was all she needed to know.

Neve scrambled for her bag, trying to ignore the pain that was no longer just in her head. She tried to grab her gun too, just to keep it even.

"Woah there, calm down. Stay still. You just got hit by lightning, don't go so fast," the person said, laying the gun down. He held up his hands to show he wouldn't shoot.

"Who the hell are you?" Neve croaked, coughing lightly. Even a cough was suspicious these days because of the disease. She was surprised when he didn't even flinch.

"I can't tell you that just yet," he chuckled, placing his hands back at his sides.

"Well then tell me where we're going," she demanded, trying to sound strong. It was useless, she didn't look it. She leaned back onto the ground, letting herself collapse.

"I don't think you're coming with us all the way there, we'll drop you off once this storm blows by."

"Where are we headed? Why are you guys so secretive?"

"Well we can't just go picking up strangers and telling them all about us, can we? For all we know you could be a dangerous gang member or even a WCKD spy, or most likely: a crank," he nodded. Neve couldn't disagree, he was right. Even though presently she was none of those things.

"I guess we're all just trying to stay alive, that's it. Trust is a luxury," she sighed, pulling her bag closer to her, resting her hand on her knife.

"That's true," the masked saviour laughed dryly.

"How many people are in this van?" Neve questioned.

"Four including you and me, it was just a few of us heading up to gather more information," he explained.

"Information on what?"

"You sure do ask a lot of questions." Neve could hear a hint of annoyance in his voice. She looked over at him again. He was tall and looked strong. If she made him mad and he lashed out, even without a weapon, she knew she'd get hurt. Neve shut her lips and looked away. She pushed herself to sit up, pulling her cheek off the dirty floor.

"What's your name?" the guy asked.

"Why should I tell you?" she shook her head.

"Because we're gonna be driving for a while and it'd be nice to know a thing or two about you."

"Oh, so it's okay when you ask questions? I can't even see your face," she retorted. It was extremely difficult to know whether or not someone was lying when you couldn't see their eyes.

"So if I take off the mask you'll tell me your name?"

"An answer for an answer," Neve nodded.

He brought his hand to the bottom of the mask and pulled it off to reveal his face. He had freckled skin and short, dirty blond hair. He had a strong jaw, he almost looked scary. Almost, but his eyes changed the look of his whole face. They were a striking blue, and the look in his eyes was the same as her own. They were the eyes of a scared kid who grew up way too fast. They were the eyes of a child who was forced to play warrior. She knew then, that he was not trying to hurt her.

"My name is Neve," she stated, still staring at his lake filled eyes. The boy offered a half smile and a short nod. "Now can you tell me yours?" she asked.

"Nice to meet you Neve, I'm Gally."
