— CHAPTER EIGHTEEN —
DETENTION IN THE FORBIDDEN FOREST
"This is all your fault, Potter," Malfoy hissed at Harry as we followed Filch down the hill to Hagrid's hut in the dark. They were just behind Filch whilst Ron, Hermione and I stayed behind slightly, not wanting to get involved in their little argument.
"My fault?! You were the one that grassed on us!" Harry snapped back.
"You shouldn't have been out of bed," Malfoy complained.
"Nor should you," I said, including myself in their tiff. It had been going on back and forth since we left the castle and I was starting to get on my nerves, "what were you doing out of bed anyway?"
"What were you doing out of bed?" Malfoy asked in a nicer tone than he used with Harry but still harsh.
"Visiting Hagrid, you numskull. Now what were you doing?" I repeated.
"I followed you guys," Malfoy replied, a frown set on his features.
"Nosey git," I muttered under my breath in reply.
We finally reached the bottom of the hill and were greeted with a sniffling Hagrid, holding a crossbow, with a loyal fang sat beside his feet.
"A pity they let the old punishments die. There was a time detention would find you hanging by your thumbs in the dungeons. God, I miss the screaming," Filch laughed sickly. He should not be allowed to work in a school or even be within five-hundred metres of one, "You'll be serving detention with Hagrid tonight. He's got a little job to do inside the dark forest. A sorry lot this, Hagrid." Filch stopped talking once he realised that Hagrid was sniffling, "Oh, good God, man, you're not still on about that bloody dragon, are you?"
"Norbert's gone. Dumbledore sent him off to Romania to live in a colony," Hagrid sighed, sniffling his tears away. I walked up to the large man and wrapped my arms around his leg. I wasn't near tall enough to give him a proper hug, this was all I could do for him. He showed his appreciation by wrapping his spare arm around me.
"Well, that's good, isn't it? He'll be with his own kind," Hermione said sympathetically.
"Yeah, but what if he don't like Romania?" Hagrid sniffled, the vibrations of his gruff voice travelling throughout my entire body, "What if the other dragons are mean to him? He's only a baby, after all."
"Oh, for Gods sake, pull yourself together, man. You're going into the forest, after all. Got to have your wits about you," Filch snapped, rolling his eyes at Hagrid's sensitive side.
