Kanawut wiped his forehead and answered the call from the forensics, "Hey Joy, what do you have for me?"
"Firstly, whoever these people are, they're psychos. They used every weapon we found on him. They used the baseball bat and the syringes had a type of drug in it. It's crazy. I just hope they didn't make him drink the paint too. Check your email, from the pictures of the scene, there was certainly more than one person at the scene but we only found one pair of fingerprints which is really weird if the suspects left one person's fingerprint all over like that. There's also a call log from his phone. I got the registrations for the phone numbers so there are addresses and more information attached. Lastly, there is a suspicious message, I think that's our lead."
"I'll take it from here thanks."
"Aah one more thing, I've attached the identity of the owner of the fingerprints too, that's our suspect for now." She said as if bragging about how good she was at her job.
"You're the best Joy."
"I know." The call ended.
Kanawut logged on his pc. He went to his email and looked at the call log and messages.
The victim had talked to several people with unsaved numbers and received messages about a reunion, the dates were a week before. What put Kanawut off was the message from another unsaved number warning him to be careful of the guys as they seem to be suspicious.
So he had to find out who 'the guys' were and also the person who sent the message.
He scrolled down and saw an attachment of an ID. He opened it and he was face to face with a face he wasn't expecting to see. A face he hadn't seen in ten years. He shook his head in denial. Why was this face showing up here?
He took his phone and called Joy again,
"Hey Joy," he started his voice chocked, "just to confirm, did you say the fingerprints on the scene belong to this person?"
"Yeah his fingerprints were all over the place. What's wrong, do you know him?"
"No. No I don't. Thanks." He lied smoothly and ended the call. He stared at the ID on the screen.
Mew Suppasit Jongcheveevat.
Why was his fingerprints on the crime scene?
He got up and grabbed his jacket and left for the crime scene again. He must've missed something. He had to check on more time.
Mew couldn't possibly be involved in a hate crime. He just couldn't be.
When he got to the apartment, he went over the yellow do not cross police line and entered the house. He looked slowly starting from the entrance not to miss anything. There wasn't much in the house. There were no pictures on the wall. He went to the bedroom and saw the blood on the floor. He maneuvered in the room until he got to the nightstand. He opened the drawers and there he saw a wallet. He opened the wallet and he just couldn't understand what was going on. Why was Mew's wallet here if he was the suspect? He looked around some more and he saw a Chrome notebook. He opened it and Mew's face was on the lock screen.
kanawut stopped what he was doing. He cleared his mind in order to decode the situation at hand. He looked around and his eyes got stuck on the blood spot on the floor. He closed his eyes as his mind took him back to the moment he saw the body for the first time. He focused more on the victim's face. It was swollen but he strained his memory until the face started to become clear in his mind.
He opened his eyes wide and gasped looking at the face on the laptop screen. He called Joy again.
"What is it this time?" Joy asked.
His voice was shaky as he asked, "The fingerprints, what if they're the victim's fingerprints and not the suspects'?"
Joy gasped too surprised by this logic, "Then they played us. It makes sense now because the scene definitely had more than one person on it. They cleaned it good and left the victims fingerprints all over."
"I got to go." He ended the call before Joy could reply.
He called Wes, his hands shaking, "Hey Wes how's he doing?"
"He's in critical state. They're doing everything they can. He had many drugs in his system, he had broken bones, swollen and cut veins, he's a mess."
"He has to be ok." Kanawut whispered desperately.
"Why do you know him?" Wes asked curious.
"I do. It was hate crime. I don't know the full details but I just-
"-Hey, hey calm down. What's happening?" Wes picked up on Kanawut's distraught voice from his rambling.
"I'm on my way, I'll tell you when I get there."
"Sure, see you soon."
Kanawut headed for the hospital his mind repeating the same thing. He had to live. He had to make it. His fists gripped the steering wheel tight as his foot cooperated well with the accelerator.
When he got there, he ran to where Wes was waiting. He was briefed that they were still working on him.
Kana wiped his face as he sat down on the bench. Wes came and sat next to him.
"What's going on?" He asked worried.
"I know him." Kanawut confessed.
"The victim?"
"Yes. From high school. He used to be..."
What? He questioned himself. There was never a relationship between them, they were not friends either.
"We were in the same grade." He finished.
Wes looked at Kanawut suspiciously and asked, "was he one of them?" He knew the story.
Kanawut looked up sadly and shook his head, "he was the one who ran away."
Wes got confused just like Kanawut was. Why did he turn up like this after ten wholesome years? What happened? His head was full of questions too.
Wes knew Kana's horrible past because he was his closest friend. He got to know Kanawut's sexuality after walking in on him making out with a boy. Kanawut pleaded with Wes to keep his secret safe because he had a bad past. Wes insisted on knowing the past that made Kana live a lie. After he heard the story, he was so angry and wanted to find them all and kill them.
This case only reminded Wes how his hatred was still present. How he still wanted to find the bigoted homophobes and just kill them all.
